Editor of Tank Magazine & fashion week favourite, Caroline Issa, discusses her new collection with L.K.Bennett and her thoughts on being a street style star.
How did the collaboration with L.K.Bennett happen?
L.K.Bennett was an opportunity that came about from a conversation… I don’t have any formal design training, and would never claim to be a shoe designer, but I certainly have a point of view and it [came together] when I thought about what I’d want to wear come spring! I did draw the shoes myself, but it’s a skill, and let me tell you: I spent hours and hours on my drawings.
How did you find the creative process?
I have been lucky to follow the careers and collections of many designers over the last 12 years I’ve worked in fashion publishing – and I’ve always admired how they have been able to create multiple collections, ideas and silhouettes year in and year out. So I was excited to draw out some of my own creativity to create this capsule and found that while it came out naturally, it was also a considered and deeply personal process. I loved it but currently will stick with my day job!
What were your key inspirations? How involved were you with choosing materials etc?
My inspiration was a trip to Thailand and the beautiful trinkets and accessories I brought back with me as my memories. I was very involved throughout the entire design process closely working with the L.K.Bennett team and the brilliant Kim Saint (Head of Production) who completely understood my vision and helped me translate it so well.
Can you describe your style?
It’s clichéd, I know – but its best described as classic with a twist. I love tailoring and effortlessness – I’m not into fussy dressing – so I’ll choose pieces or outfits that are easy to put together, like a suit, or a dress that only requires a belt to give it a great silhouette.
How do you feel about being a style-setter and street-style star?
I don’t think I dress any differently during the fashion month than my day-to-day, so of course I’m honored that anyone would think it’s stylish. I think the beauty of the street-style phenomenon is that it’s uncovered the personal style of many of those behind the scenes.
What outfit would you style with the L.K.Bennett collection shoes?
So many ways to wear the shoes with different outfits – jeans and a t-shirt with the courts – a trouser suit with the loafers, etc – they go with everything!
When it comes to footwear, do you favour form over function?
I love it when form partners with function, so comfortable heels are a must!
