Your Houseplant Care Guide With @shopthegarden
Bring the outdoors inside, and embrace nature. These are our top tips for caring for your houseplants, brought to you by Mark Grehan of The Garden.
Tip 1: Start with Succulents
For those who find the thought of houseplants daunting, begin by introducing cacti and succulents as they do not require too much attention.
Tip 2: Spring is the time for repotting
Spring is the ideal time for repotting your houseplants. When doing so, go for a houseplant compost mix rather than a peat based mix, as the compost is good for revitalizing the soil.
Tip 3: Water from the Bottom Up
Houseplants like to be watered from the bottom up and, just like ourselves, enjoy a good soak from time to time. So feel free to shower them in lukewarm water.
Tip 4: Lay the Base
A layer of gravel at the base of the planter pot is good for drainage and prevents the plants from sitting in water, which they don’t like.
Tip 5: Talk to your Plants
Your family or flatmates might think you’ve gone mad, but talk to the plants; they are really good listeners and they don’t speak back.
Tip 6: Polish your Plants
For cleaning and shining your houseplants, mix equal amounts of milk and water in a bowl and use a clean cloth to wipe the plants. Calcium contains beneficial proteins, vitamin B and sugars that are good for plants, improving their overall health.
Tip 7: Plants don't need to Social Distance
As much as social distancing is becoming the norm for us all, plants do well together and create a nice display when they are grouped together.
Tip 8: Let plants sunbathe
No one, not even a plant, wants to be left in a cold dark drafty hallway. Plants like a warm spot, but generally keep your plants out of direct sunlight and away from heaters.
