Years Of Brown Thomas
For over 175 years, Brown Thomas has been the home of luxury. The ultimate destination for shopping the world's leading brands in fashion, beauty and lifestyle. With six stores located at the heart of Dublin, Cork, Limerick, and Galway. Follow a timeline of the events that made us who we are, from 1849 to modern day.

A Store Is Born!
Brown Thomas was established in 1849 by two enterprising business men, Hugh Brown and James Thomas. The store began trading as a general draper and haberdasher, but soon grew into a large, beautiful store with an impressive Victorian façade designed by famed Irish architect William Caldbeck.

A Joycean Display
Did you know that Brown Thomas features in Ulysses, the modernist masterpiece by James Joyce? Joyce wrote of Leopold Bloom, the main character, "dallying the windows of Brown Thomas silk mercers", the windows full of "gleaming silks, petticoats on slim brass rails, rays of flat silk stockings."

The Roaring Twenties
Harry Gordon Selfridge bought Brown Thomas in 1919, and in the following decade, transformed the store into a newly modern entity. In the 1920s, theatres, ballrooms, music clubs and cinemas created a new sense of style, glamour and excitement.

In Irish Hands
In 1933, Brown Thomas moved back into Irish hands under John McGuire & Sons, otherwise known for helming Clery's. John McGuire built Brown Thomas into an icon of grace and good taste, seeing the business through good times and bad, including a world war.

Dior Joins Brown Thomas
In 1950, we welcomed a Dior boutique to Brown Thomas. The first Dior boutique was a replica of the Dior salon in Paris, and Christian Dior himself even joined us in-store for the grand opening.

A Royal Visit
Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Irish-American tourism was at its height. In 1961, Princess Grace and Prince Rainier visited Ireland. She was presented with a Carrickmacross lace mantilla, beautifully presented in an iconic Brown Thomas bag emblazoned with the slogan: The Loveliest Store In Ireland.

The Weston Legacy
In the 1970s, the Weston family took over leadership of Brown Thomas. Galen and Hilary Weston brought new, modern brands and displays to Brown Thomas, first starting with renovations of the Grafton Street store.

The Big Move
In 1991, the Switzers Group was acquired by Brown Thomas, and four years later the two shops on Grafton Street merged into one. Brown Thomas' old premises was bought by Marks & Spencer, which is still there now, and Brown Thomas moved across Grafton Street into the old Switzers building, where we still are today.
A Super New Age
Brown Thomas rang in the millennium in style with the staging of the International Fashion Show at Dublin's Point Theatre (now the 3Arena). Organised in aid of the Chernobyl Children's Project, the ISPCC and Marie Keating Foundation, the night was broadcast live on the iconic Late Late Show. A host of international designers and models arrived in Dublin for the show, including Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Eva Herzigova and Yasmin Le Bon.

A Christmas Carol
Brown Thomas has long been known for our decadent, immersively festive window displays at Christmas time. In 2011, Michael Bublé joined us for the unveiling of that year's festive windows, with thousands gathering on Grafton Street to join in on the fun.

2022 welcomed a new era for Brown Thomas under the leadership of Central Group. That same year, we opened Brown Thomas Dundrum, a 62,000 square foot state-of-the-art store, featuring innovative beauty and shopping experiences.
