THE BIG BEAUTY RESET

The beauty dial has been reset over the past few months and some are for the better and are here to stay.

We’ve embraced a slower pace of life and are prioritising time to take care of ourselves. Sunday skincare has moved from being a social media sharable moment to a self-care Sunday ritual where relaxing baths, a weekly skincare mask routine, time rebalancing outdoors in nature or sport (with SPF protection) or unwinding with a luxury scented candle or at home treatment has become the order of the day.

We’re also buying better and considering our needs more, by choosing brands that reflect our sustainable or charitable values, our desire to support Irish brands; and researching the ingredients in products that feed our individual beauty needs.

Read on to discover the new-normal approach to how we shop beauty now.

A Conscious Choice

We believe that beauty products should show as much respect for our skin as the environment and respect our planet’s future. Did you know that when you make a conscious choice as a consumer to shop from our “Sustainable Edit” featuring beauty products that are vegan, cruelty-free, recycled, refillable or plastic-free packaging; you’re supporting materials and production methods that sit lightly on the earth.

Greenwashing is an industry issue whereby some brands claim to be vegan, cruelty-free or sustainable in their resource or production line; yet they can’t produce or provide official international certs or documentation to back-up their claims. We’ve done the hard work to assess brand practises and product certifications so every time you see our Positive Change logo on a product, you can shop with confidence and convenience knowing your choices are making a difference to the world. Discover the Positive Change make-up, skincare and fragrance products you love today featuring Anastasia Beverly Hills, Aveda, bareMinerals, YSL beauty, iT Cosmetics, Sunday Riley, Tata Harper, Kiehl’s and many more.

IN THE KNOW INGREDIENTS

This slower pace has led many of us to spend more time investigating what we really need from our skincare products and to understand the specific ingredients that power our favourite formulas, helping us make the very best choices.

We analysed the data to see which beauty ingredients have been searched for the most on the Brown Thomas site since lockdown and highlighted the benefits you’ll reap from each ingredient.

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3, which is famous for having soothing and healing properties which are essential for treating breakouts. Extensive research also shows niacinamide works to protect skin from environmental damage and stimulates the skin to produce more collagen and hyaluronic acid. It improves hydration, reduces signs of ageing, diminishes enlarged pores, and significantly lessens skin discolouration. We recommend Omorovicza Silver Skin Savior for combating blemishes and breakouts. The Ordinary also has a stand-alone product and bareMinerals new Skin Longevity collection features this ingredient heavily and is also vegan, cruelty-free.

Squalane is great for balancing oil production, providing just enough moisture to keep the skin clear and healthy. The antioxidants found in squalane also fight skin damage and free radicals, which can both accelerate the aging process. We recommend The Ordinary 100% Plant Derived Squalane and The Inkey List Squalan Oil.

Retinol is derived from vitamin A and works by increasing the rate of cell turnover in the skin, along with the production of collagen, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines, pigmentation and even acne. For a high strength retinol, we recommend 111 Skin The Celestial Black Diamond Retinol Oil or MURAD’s Retinol night cream or Clinique’s Fresh Pressed Clinical™ Daily + Overnight Boosters with Pure Vitamins C 10% + A (Retinol) duo’s.

Glycolic Acid is an exfoliant that helps shed dead skin cells and reveal the newer, brighter layers underneath by acting on the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of skin). By stimulating collagen production, it helps skin feel firmer and minimizes fine lines and wrinkles. We love Sunday Riley’s Good Genes Glycolic Acid Treatment and The Inkey List Glycolic Acid 10%, Liquid Toner works to help remove dead and dehydrated skin cells from the surface to reveal a brighter and more even skin tone overtime.

Vitamin C is known as one of the best ultra-protective, anti-ageing ingredients on the market, as well as being a reliable multi-tasker, it's also the key to maintaining a smooth, even, and glowing complexion. From uneven skin tone and fine lines to acne scars and general dullness, there is a good chance that vitamin C can help you out. Try KIEHLS Powerful Strength Line-Reducing & Dark Circle-Diminishing Vitamin C Eye Serum for dark circles to helps visibly diminish fine lines, crow’s feet and puffiness. Sunday Riley C.E.O 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum leaves skin looking firmer and plumper, as youthful skin and even-tone are restored. Estee Lauder’s Perfectionist Pro Rapid Brightening Treatment with Ferment2+ Vitamin C helps overtime with dark spots, sunspots, age spots and acne marks to reveal a more even-toned, radiant look.
