THE BEST SUSTAINABLE BEAUTY PRODUCTS TO TRY

From brands you never knew were a part of our sustainable edit to the industry trailblazers, we round up the best sustainable beauty brands across skincare, hair, makeup and fragrance that are making an effort to leave a positive impact on the planet.

When it comes to sustainable beauty we’ve come a long way from face wipes and toxic glitter pots. But big change comes from big business, so it’s reassuring to know that some of our favourite names in beauty are pushing hard to achieve sustainable goals and lighten their footprint on the world, and ours too.

Below, a few of the industry-leading brands that are stepping (with large and small strides) into a more sustainable future:

Charlotte Tilbury

Charlotte Tilbury wooed us with her abundance of glow-giving products, long-wearing foundations, radiant highlighters, and extensive range of lipsticks, but we’re making the love affair official after the brand was granted the Leaping Bunny certification by Cruelty-Free International, which works to end animal testing in cosmetics, personal care and household products.

The brand’s cult-favourite Magic Cream (initially inspired by a home recipe the legendary make-up artist would use behind the scenes on models like Kate Moss) now features an entire refill set, allowing you to maintain your magic skincare regimen while also caring for the environment.

Le Labo

This New York-based boutique fragrance house has the feel of a laboratory or apothecary, which works well with the brand’s commitment to craftsmanship and doing everything by hand. But it’s not just a lofty vision that keeps us going back for more. Each Le Labo scent is freshly hand-blended to order, using natural, responsibly sourced ingredients, free from phthalates, parabens and other environmentally harmful ingredients, and is 100% vegan and cruelty-free. All packaging, including the bottle carton, box and bag, is made from recycled or recyclable materials. Even Le Labo’s candles use soy wax and pure cotton wicks, which is a greener alternative to paraffin.

Aveda

Since its formation in 1978, Aveda has pioneered clean beauty long before it was hijacked by the marketing industry. They’ve been walking the walk ever since. Not only did Aveda go completely vegan as of 2021, but 90% of its high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic bottles also use a minimum of 80% PCR, made from milk bottles, and two products are packaged in 100% PCR HDPE bottles. They’ve also raised around $60 million for environmental initiatives, partnering with charities to provide clean water in India and Africa, countries where they source ingredients, and all products are manufactured using renewable energy.

Sunday Riley

This Texas-based brand has been around for a decade, but its popularity has skyrocketed in recent years. And it’s easy to see why. Sunday Riley creates luxury skincare powered by science and balanced by botanicals. The formulas are free of parabens, phthalates, and artificial fragrances, and are manufactured in small batches, keeping environmental sustainability in mind. They are even a Certified B-Corp that regularly gives back to environmental and human rights initiatives.

Dr Barbara Sturm

Founded by the German aesthetics doctor famous for pioneering the vampire facial favoured by Kim Kardashian and Victoria Beckham, Dr Barbara Sturm’s portfolio of products are celebrated for their effective formulations as well as their sustainable packing. Ingredients and components are locally-sourced wherever possible and most recently the brand has begun dispensing with all outer packaging, bar a biodegradable bag and bottle that the formulation comes in. Informational leaflets are not included: customers scan QR codes to receive further information. It’s an innovative approach that cuts back on waste and one that can be easily replicated across the industry.
