GREAT DANES

With Copenhagen leading the way when it comes to style inspiration right now, we speak to three of the city’s most exciting labels who share their secrets to dressing the Danish way.

What kind of creative magic is in the water in Copenhagen? The Danish city cannot put a foot wrong when it comes to food, furniture, art, fairytales and now, too, fashion. For a slew of new designers and fashion houses in the city, their Instagram moment is well and truly here. A Spring Summer 2019 Copenhagen-designed dress is simply the most covetable thing to wear - and be photographed in - today.

This new wave of Danish designers has flipped the script on what Scandi-style means to the masses. Gone is the pared-back, monochrome, androgynous aesthetic once synonymous with Danish living. Instead, these new Scandi brands favour colour pop prints, clashing motifs, and Pantone-potent hues. The new Danish rules of dressing are simple - having fun with patterns and prints is key, but the pieces themselves have got to allow for the practicalities of life. A uniform of an oversized sweater, midi skirt, and trainers, or a full-length silk dress with biker boots is the go-to. These clothes are terribly wearable, a masterful and joyous blend of comfortable yet effortlessly cool wardrobe essentials.

Stine Goya’s spring offering is a lesson in Copenhagen’s style-perfect equation. This season they offer a kaleidoscopic collection of silk polka dots, mint green oversized blazers and hot pink billowing pagan dresses, all alongside a very hard-working classic camel coat. The practical element is never too far away.

Then there’s GANNI, founded in 2000 by husband-and-wife duo, Nicolaj and Ditte Reffstrup. They have created a globally-adored label which showcases their self-proclaimed “Scandi 2.0” sense of style. “As Danes we are brought up with an appreciation and understanding of aesthetics and quality design. We have a heritage that has managed to democratise design without compromising quality or aesthetic” explains Ditte. “As a Dane, you know that the society is there to take care of you, it gives you a freedom and balance you can’t find anywhere else”.

For those of you taking note, the secret to embracing Copenhagen’s magic is simple, says Ditte.

The Copenhagen fashion scene is a celebration of our hometown and our talented friends. It feels like a special time for Danish culture in general. Paris and Milan are so glamorous but, essentially, it's all about having fun with fashion, otherwise you're missing the point.

And take ROTATE, a new label from Birger Christensen in partnership with Danish stylists and influencers Jeanette Madsen and Thora Valdimars. Their first collection was launched during Copenhagen Fashion Week in August 2018 to international excitement. They’ve tapped into the Copenhagen “It” girl, and everyone wants a piece. “We are all about having fun, celebrating and empowering women. The styles are super feminine and each highlight specific female figures – making thigh-high slits, mini styles, and bold cutouts brand trademarks, “ says Birger. “It’s for women who love to stand out and want to add some sparkle to their everyday life, but at an affordable price point.” For those of us desperate to channel the trend, Christensen says, it’s not about where you work or what you do, “It’s the mindset. Our girl isn’t afraid to stand out.”
