CHRISTMAS WITH...MICHAEL KORS

Even legendary fashion designers don’t always get what they want for Christmas. As Michael Kors celebrates 40 years in business, the designer reflects on career highs and lows, timeless design and the best (and worst) gifts he’s ever received.

Michael Kors knows how to make women look fabulous. He’s been doing it for four decades. Now in his 40th year in business, the designer has reached iconic status in the industry. His designs stand the test of time as they are at once timeless and interchangeable, luxurious yet democratic. He’s revered as much for his in-demand accessories (Nomad Tote bag anyone?), as he is for his wardrobe essentials. We spoke to the designer about his illustrious career and most magical Christmas memories.

In a special, holiday-themed interview, Michael Kors shares the biggest lesson he’s learnt from 40 years in the business, the highs and lows from the past 18 months and his favourite Christmas pastimes.

2021 has been quite the year for you, do you have any particular highlights?

“It’s been a crazy year, truly a rollercoaster of highs, like celebrating my 40th year in business - and lows, including the many ways that the pandemic continues to cause difficulty and suffering. Highlights for me were presenting our 40th-anniversary collection at night in New York City’s theatre district - it was magical! And finally beginning to travel again.”

With a spacious main compartment, detachable compact pouch, coin purse and AirPod case, the Michael Kors Jet Set bag will keep you organised on the go.

What has been the biggest high point from 40 years in business?

“I love what I do, so it’s impossible to pick just one favourite memory! Two that stand out are seeing Michelle Obama wear Michael Kors Collection for her first official White House portrait and being named a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations World Food Programme.”

Is there a particular design that has truly stood the test of time over the past four decades?

“There are definitely things that I think stand the test of time: a perfectly cut camel coat, a pair of white jeans, a black cashmere turtleneck and a luggage-coloured satchel are a few that come to mind. And of course, a great pair of aviator sunglasses—that’s the quickest way to timeless glamour.”

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned along your career journey?

“Trust your own instincts, and always be empathetic, both as a designer and as a human being.”

Where will you be spending the festive season this year?

“I will spend some time in Europe and then will be with family and friends at our home in Florida.”

Michael Kors has been creating timeless accessories since 1981 and the Hamilton Legacy satchel is no exception with its pragmatic yet statement design.

What’s the best holiday gift you’ve ever received?

“A few years ago, my mom gave me an album filled with photos from my childhood. Being able to relive great memories and having them thoughtfully preserved is priceless.”

...And the worst?

“As a child, I received a chemistry set, which I think was wishful thinking to get me more engaged in science. In fact, I never opened it!”

What makes for the perfect present this gifting season?

“You can’t go wrong with a chic, timeless handbag like our Hamilton Legacy Satchel. For the fashion-forward on your list, I recommend our new Karlie handbag. It’s structured and chic and comes in the best colours of the season.”

Favourite holiday tradition or memory?

“I love my grandmother’s potato latkes, they’re one of my favourite holiday traditions. They always remind me of her.”

Favourite festive indulgence?

“Homemade pumpkin and apple pies.”

How do you plan to ring in the new year?

“We will spend it with friends watching the ball drop on television, definitely with some caviar and Champagne.”

What’s next for Michael Kors in 2022?

“I’m hopeful for all of us to get back to travelling, exploring the world and spending more time with friends and family.”
