WHY FLORALS ARE ACTUALLY GROUNDBREAKING THIS SPRING
This season, botanicals bloomed quite literally from the catwalks in many mesmerising ways, making it a ground-breaking way to dress right now. We zoom in on the trend here...
THE TREND
Flowers are blooming in dramatically different ways this spring. At Loewe J W Anderson knows how to make florals a dangerous rather than dainty spring bloom with his provocative anthuriums-as-bra-cups on dresses, while Dries Van Noten opted for prints in full bloom across floor-sweeping gowns and sharp suiting. Erdem stepped into a 1930s English country garden and showcased his glorious take on petals with full-length dresses in soft tones of yellow and cream. Prada as always looking to the future, took a new take on florals with delicate 3D rosettes.
DIVINE FLORAL INSPIRATION
Designers looked to lesser known flora and fauna for inspiration. Jonathan Anderson’s show worked exotic oversized anthuriums on the catwalk. The floral artist Constance Spry who created floral displays for the Queen’s coronation was Erdem’s inspiration and across the water Ulla Johnson took inspiration from the colour of faded roses for her prints and colour palette. The message was clear, embrace florals but make it out of the ordinary.
You have the colours; you have the flowers…” So let’s smell them?

THE BEAUTY MOMENT
You could argue that floral scents never went away but for 2023, floral fragrances are back - and in a big way. From jasmine and gardenia to ylang-ylang and neroli, there is an abundance of variety when it comes to floral perfumes meaning there is a scent to suit all tastes. Yet the one big floral scent that appeals to all is rose - but not how you know it. “Rose perfumes are having a huge resurgence,” Aidan Corcoran, Head of Beauty Personal Shopping at Brown Thomas. “The classic scent has been redeveloped and revamped. Rose is now invigorating, it is classic yet modern at the same time and already proving to be extremely popular.” What was once considered a feminine scent, florals can now be brash, masculine and sultry, just as easily as they can be pretty, light and sweet.
SEEING FLOWERS EVERYWHERE
We are seeing flowers everywhere, popping up on everything from designer’s catwalks to tablescapes, and the trend is set to continue for 2023 with florists, artists, chefs, designers and beauty brands embracing the power of petals. There’s 20 Flowers and Some Bigger Pictures, an exhibition of recent iPad paintings by David Hockney at the Pace Gallery in New York, Lucien Freud’s Plant Portraits at The Garden Museum in London which brings together a selection of never seen before paintings and etchings of plants and gardens and in Dublin James Coleman: Still Life, 2013-2016, a large scale projection and video installation of poppies at the National Gallery of Ireland.
