How To Dress Your Christmas Tree
8 Steps To A Perfect Tree
The Christmas tree is, for many, the centre of all the holiday festivities. It is where we spend time with our loved ones, making a tradition out of decorating it, gathering to exchange gifts under it, and more.
These are our top tips and tricks to help you create a luxury and professional-worthy tree in the comfort of your own home.

1. Choosing The Right Tree
The first and most important step is choosing the right Christmas tree for your home. Decide where in your home you are going to place your tree. Ascertain how tall you want your tree to be, how broad you want it to be, and if you want to opt for an artificial tree or a natural one.

2. Spread And Shape Your Branches
If you have chosen an artificial tree, it is important to next make sure that each of the branches is spread out and shaped evenly. Fluff out the boughs and make sure the tree looks full and even on all sides.

3. All About The Base
A tree stand or skirt can both stabilise your tree, and look good in the process. Hide any unsightly metal or plastic stands, with decorative skirts or covers to make sure your tree really does look its best from top to bottom.

4. Know What Lights You Want
Next, we move onto the lights. If you have chosen a natural tree, or a tree which is not pre-lit, then lights are a very important next step, but with so many different kinds available, it can be difficult to know where to start. That’s where we come in.
First, consider what colour you want your lights to be. Are you going for a soft yellow-white glow, or a bright blue-white shine? Or, do you want to brighten up your tree with coloured or multicoloured lights?
Secondly, consider how large you want the bulbs to be, and what shape. Do you want a larger circular or bauble shaped bulb, or would you prefer miniature, twinkling lights?
Next step is to consider if you want to use battery operated lights, or lights which plug into your wall. Battery operated lights tend to be smaller, and may work better for miniature trees or household decorations.
Lastly, it’s important to figure out just how many sets of lights or bulbs you’re going to need. Generally, it’s considered a good rule to have about 100 bulbs for every foot and a half of your tree. So a 6 foot tree would need about 400 bulbs.

5. Light ‘Em Up
Now that you’ve chosen your lights, it’s time to drape them. When you’re hanging your chosen lights on your tree, first it’s important to plug them in to ensure every bulb is working. Then, starting from the top of the tree, work your way down by intertwining and weaving the lights through the branches. Make sure to decorate the back of the tree, as well, for a well-rounded and evenly lit look.

6. Layer On Your Decorations
Possibly the most important aspect of your tree decorating is the placement of the decorations themselves. Make sure to hang an assortment of decoration styles, shapes and sizes, and to spread them all around the tree evenly in order to make sure that the tree doesn’t appear clustered in places and bare in others.

7. Top Of The Tree
Now that your tree is well-lit and beautifully decorated, it’s time to add the final finishing touch, the topper. Whether yours is a family heirloom handed down through generations, a handmade favourite or a new tradition, every tree needs a topper to tie it all together.

8. Now… Presents!
Now that your tree is beautifully decorated, well-lit and the centre of all attention, it’s time to focus on what will lie beneath it. Presents! For all your gift-giving needs, look no further than Brown Thomas.
