STELLA’S REVOLUTION
Stella McCartney remains at the helm of fashion’s most important and exciting revolution.
Stella McCartney decided two important things at the tender age of 12; first, that she would be a fashion designer, and second, that as a designer, she would never use leather, fur or feathers in anything she created. Up until now, her eponymous label operates 51 freestanding stores and has collections distributed in 77 countries worldwide, with each and every piece that she makes and sells staying true to her childhood vow.
Perhaps one of the most inspiring things about Stella is that while a portion of her customers do align themselves with the brand's ethics, many more buy her pieces simply because of their exquisite design and superb quality. She has tipped a unique balance, uncompromising in her beliefs and standards while retaining that luxury allure. She has proven that fashion and style needn’t suffer in the face of a sustainable choice.
Let's talk about her materials, all of which put the planet first. Her knitwear is made from re-engineered cashmere, which offers the same soft, insulating qualities as cashmere without the environmental impact associated with animal raising. Since Spring 2017, the ready-to-wear viscose has come from sustainably managed and certified forests in Sweden. As for cotton, their organic sources ensure no pesticides are used, that production practices are fair and safe, and that farmer debt and sickness caused by chemicals is eliminated.
Speaking of workforce health, Stella considers the origins of the fabrics we wear to be as important as how they are used and worn, “The future of fashion relies on people, including those who make clothes, the farmers who grow the crops, our employees and customers,” she maintains, “We want to ensure a positive impact on the people we depend on and those who depend on us in return.” Her collaborations with everyone from the Ethical Trading Initiative and the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute have been key in highlighting the farm and factory worker's plight in the industry.

But that’s just for starters. There’s her Fur-Free-Fur, vegetarian leather, and the news that she's replacing natural silk with Bolt Threads, a synthetic creation that rivals the original material in strength, elasticity, durability, and softness. From regenerative farming to the use of ECONYL®, an innovative technology that turns nylon waste into first-grade nylon yarn, the future of McCartney’s fashion is as innovative as the clothing designs themselves.
Whether sustainability is a top priority for you, or you simply want to find a piece you love to wear, investing in a piece by Stella McCartney this season is truly the most on-trend thing you could do.
Stella McCartney says: "If you want to buy something these days, buy something that isn’t killing your planet!"
