Cleansing is the first and most important step in your skincare routine, so choosing the right cleanser is just as important.

With so many different kinds of cleansers available, it can be hard to know which one to choose. That’s why we’ve broken down our cleansers, examining the skin concerns which they help to combat, to help you make the right choice.

Foam Skin Cleansers

1. Foaming Cleanser

Suitable for: combination, oily, or acne prone skin.

A light, foaming cleaner removes most types of makeup, cleanses the skin thoroughly and softens your skin. Cleansers don’t have to foam to work properly, but many prefer foamy textures for cleansing.

We suggest: Clarins – Gentle Foaming Cleanser

Skin Oil-Based Cleanser

2. Oil-Based Cleanser

Suitable for: all skin types.

An oil-based cleanser, or cleansing oil, will remove heavy makeup (including eye makeup) or can be used as part of a double cleansing routine to gently lift any dirt and impurities. To double cleanse, first cleanse skin with an oil-based cleanser and remove with a warm cloth followed by a gentle milk or cream cleanser.

We suggest: Tata Harper – Nourishing Oil Cleanser

Gel Skin Cleanser

3. Gel Cleanser

Suitable for: normal or combination skin.

More lightweight in feel. A good cleansing gel easily removes light make-up, moisturises your skin and leaves your skin feeling fresh.

We suggest: La Mer – The Cleansing Gel

Cream Or Milk Skin Cleanser

4. Cream or Milk Cleanser

Suitable for: normal, dry and sensitive skin.

Perfect if you prefer cleansers that moisturise your skin. Cream and lotion cleansers have a silky texture and remove most types of makeup but if you use waterproof products you may need a separate make-up remover.

We suggest: La Prairie – Purifying Cream Cleanser

Balm Skin Cleanser

5. Balm Cleanser

Suitable for: normal, very dry and eczema-sensitive skin.

Will deeply nourish and moisturise the skin by not stripping any essential oils. Remove with a warm cloth for best results.

We suggest: Clinique – Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm
