ODE TO ESCENTRICS
Unexpected, intoxicating and mysterious, Escentric Molecule fragrances are as bewitching as they are bold, we meet Geza Schoen, the man behind their olfactory offerings to find out about the inspiration behind their three new launches - Molecule 01 + Iris, Molecule 01 + Patchouli and Molecule 01 + Mandarin and the concept of translating an idea that ends up in a bottle.
As we move into spring our sense of smell changes, making it the perfect time to experiment with new scents, Escentric Molecules are known for their iconic, mood altering scents and have come up with 3 new fragrances for you to enjoy. Geza, the nose behind the brand, says the biggest moment in his career was discovering the special ingredient which Molecules is known for, the Iso E Super (Molecule 1) for the first time. Since then he has been experimenting with the many possible combinations of ingredients that can go with Iso E.
He explains how the process began, “It all started with a wish for the best possible singular iris note within a fragrance. I thought about it for a while and then decided to add very little else to the iris combination so as to not detract from the powdery beauty of the iris root absolue itself. The simple inclusion of Iso E Super with the iris blew myself and my business partner Sophie away and so Molecule 1 + Iris was born. When it evolved first, I didn’t immediately think of it as an Escentric Molecules fragrance it was only after smelling Sophie wearing it, and the reaction she got from others, that the concept of developing it for commercial release formed in my mind.”

It is great fun to translate an idea which then ends up in a bottle.

Molecule 01 + Iris
Geza says, "It’s not easy to describe the essence of iris, but if you smell a fragrance without it, and then with it, you understand immediately what it does. It adds a creamy powderiness. and a physical dimension to a fragrance. I have had a long-standing love affair with iris. Every Escentric fragrance has an iris note somewhere in there. To me, iris is luxury. The iris pallida absolue I’ve used here is one of the most expensive ingredients in perfumery. You can find iris extracts for less but they do not have the great and subtle beauty of this absolue. It’s radical to put this much in a fragrance."

Iris is probably the most wonderful of all floral ingredients and one which is truly miraculous. It adds a super-softness to a perfume which you cannot describe with words. Combined with Molecule + 1 it is magical and beyond sophisticated.

Molecule 01 + Patchouli
Explaining the background to Patchouli, Schoen says. "This offering really is uniquely natural scent. It’s often associated with the sixties and seventies and a Hippy bohemian spirit. It has a cool, rather aloof woodiness to it. I love it for its moody beauty. I’ve used two qualities of patchouli within the fragrance. There is patchouli coeur which is a very clean, soft patchouli with a camphor-like top-note removed. I have also included a patchouli oil from Indonesia to round it out a little bit. The result is a sophisticated, clean patchouli that pairs fantastically well with Molecule."

Patchouli was a revelation when I tried this on people with Iso E Super. People were astounded and absolutely loved it at first scent.

Molecule 01 + Mandarin
On the Mandarin scent Geza says, "Mandarin is so alive, especially the way it radiates off the skin with that citrus zestiness. But there’s more to mandarin, it’s very fruity and aromatic as well. It’s a beautiful ingredient. Its transparency means that it vanishes quickly. I’ve touched it up with a little extra shading to extend it, adding a mandarin ingredient used in flavourings to give it super-juiciness. Then as it begins to fade, Molecule 01 syncs in, bringing a warm, erogenous feeling to play. It's unusual for these notes to dance together like this, that’s what I love about it as the scent story changes completely from beginning to middle to end."

The mandarin is the most hedonistic of all three new fragrances as we added it as a top note, which you will only smell for the first few minutes before it fades, leaving you with the augmented beauty of Molecule 01 + Mandarin on your skin.

And the best way to wear these standout fragrances? It's simple, according to Geza, “Wear wherever you want to smell great.”
Escentric Molecule 01 + Iris, Molecule 01 + Patchouli and Molecule 01 + Mandarin will be available online this March.
