PEACEFUL SLUMBER WITH NEOM

Nicola Elliott, founder of Neom Organics is passionate about getting good sleep. This former Glamour Magazine writer knows a thing or two about burning the candle at both ends. Now a qualified aromatherapist, nutritionist and creator of an all-natural brand, she shares her secrets for peaceful slumber, it’s illuminating…

“I can never look or feel my best if I haven’t had a good nights sleep. It’s the bedrock of good wellbeing” begins Nicola. In fact this was the starting point of her world-renowned brand 17 years ago. Nicola tells us “I originally started blending essential oils for my own anxiety and for my little sister who was having trouble sleeping.” For both Nicola and her sister only natural ingredients were effective, stating that placebo scents are not going to get you anywhere. Nicola says “you can’t sleep if something smells like lavender or like camomile, it has to be the pure potent essential oil in order to work it’s magic.”

Nicola believes that the best advice she can pass on is to have your own sleep routine. “Your routine is going to be slightly different to mine, everyone's has a different pattern. But it is very important, you can’t expect to drink coffee late in the evening or be scrolling on your phone for hours and then jump into bed. If you think about it, a bedtime routine is something we all had as kids but as we get older it falls by the wayside. I advocate getting back to basics.”

CRAFT YOUR SLEEP ROUTINE WITH NICOLA

1. SOMETHING TO INHALE
I start winding down about 8pm, I will either light a candle or put on one of our Wellbeing Essential Pods and it will fill the room with a relaxing sleep fragrance. As I am breathing in that fragrance I know the treatment has started and I can begin to unwind.

"This was the first blend I created, it’s got 19 essential oils. This has been used by thousands of men, women and children, for the last 17 years and it always comes out as the blend that helps you sleep in the best possible way with lavender, sweet basil and jasmine."

"Last year we developed this blend for those who prefer a more camomile based fragrance, which is more of a cocooning and slightly fruiter scent as it has hints of ylang ylang and cedarwood."

2. SOMETHING TO ABSORB
By putting something on your skin it is getting into your bloodstream. A good way to do this is in the bath combined with some mindful breathing of in for seven and out for eleven. This is lowering your parasympathetic system which ensure that the essentials oils will work to their optimum. Stay in the bath for ten or fifteen minutes, you need time for the oils to work.

“At the moment I am all about magnesium this is a wonder mineral. It helps support over 300 functions in the body and most of us are deficient in it. It can work transdermally arguably better than taking it in a pill or potion. I use a big tablespoon to do my whole body.”

3. SOMETHING TO BOOST
For some downtime in bed I always make sure that I read to allow myself to calm down and unwind. I need time to read, relax and rest in bed before attempting to sleep. For this I use a spritz of pillow mist.

“It’s water free so if you toss and turn it’s not going to make your pillow wet. I’ve used this on the children’s cots since they were babies.”
