DRIES IN DETAIL

The future is looking bright thanks to Dries Van Noten. This season he set the tone for spring with acid bright palettes and prints of psychedelic waves, suns, moons and light bars inspired by the New Zealand artist Len Lye.

Always playful Van Noten has been delivering powerful presentations that surprise and delight season after season. For spring-summer 2021, the designer used the opportunity to present his collection virtually and delivered his women’s and men’s collections as one in a Viviane Sassen-shot lookbook, we take you through our favourite images, looks and the designer’s inspiration.

Len Lye & The Art of Movement

While researching spring-summer Van Noten came across the work of the New Zealand-born filmmaker and artist, Len Lye, and was struck by his inventiveness. He said, “When I first saw his films, I thought they could have been made in the 1960s and 1970s – psychedelia – but, in fact, it was made in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s.”

From this starting point he started working with the Len Lye Foundation, to develop prints based on his work that depicted, “psychedelic sun, sunshine and moons, light bars, and palm trees.” The result was a hypnotic collection of print and colour which will set your wardrobe alight this season.

We wanted to work around beauty [that] evokes energy—not one that makes you dream or linger on things that are past, which makes you nostalgic. “It had to push you to the future, to give energy.
