LIPSTICK’S BIG COMEBACK

After a year of mask-wearing, all signs indicate a big return for lip colour. Don’t get caught in the shade. Here’s our guide to prepping your pout so you can live your best post-pandemic life.

As masks come off, lipstick go on. Last year, there was talk of the demise of the “Lipstick Index” - the phrase, coined during the 2001 recession by Leonard Lauder, to reference the relative resilience of lipstick sales during periods of economic hardship as consumers traded down to more affordable luxuries. But this year, the upsurge in demand and the brilliant new launches landing on counter proves you just can’t keep a good red down.

After all, a bright red lip is the ultimate powerhouse shade. It’s modern yet classic, and paired with a slick of mascara, it’s literally all you need to feel utterly pulled together. However, as much as a pop of scarlet adds instant glamour, we can’t help falling for new season stains in every shade. If the runways are anything to go by, berries and nudes look set to trend and soft pastels will also be extremely popular, but when masks finally come off (for good), people will want to make up for lost time with vibrant shades.

Here’s, everything you need to consider when deciding on your newest hue…

Consider Your Skin Tone

Understanding the undertone of your skin is key to choosing the best colour or shade for you, especially when it comes to reds. Specifically, you need to work out whether you have cool or warm undertones. Cool undertones mean you have more blue veins in your skin, you tend to burn easily in the sun, and you tend to suit pinkier shades. You would be better off to go for what’s called a blue-based red. That’s reds with an almost berry or pinkish tone. They really suit lighter skin tones.

Those with warmer undertones tend to suit more corals and oranges – who doesn’t love those sunshine shades? Especially if you’re olive skinned, you tend to suit orange-based lipsticks. Darker skin tones have the best of both. Both blue-based and orange-based suit warm and cool undertones.

Let’s Talk About Texture

While matte lips ruled the runways this season, there is also a good case to be made for the hydration offered by a gloss. Our advice? Go with the textures that make you feel comfortable and that you enjoy wearing. However, a red lip is so bold and striking in a matte finish, plus it lessens the chance of the pigment moving around. Glosses, on the other hand, are very malleable, but are easier to reapply on the go.

Right now, more mask-friendly formulas such as lip stains are gaining ground. Hybrid products like lip oils that treat lips while simultaneously coating them with a bit of colour, are a great solution for those looking to simplify their skincare and makeup routines.
