How did you get started as a facialist?

My first move into the beauty industry was actually training as a make-up artist in fashion and special-effects. My fascination with skincare evolved from this, recognising that great skin made the best canvas for great looking make-up. Subsequently, beauty therapy, aromatherapy, hairdressing and massage training gave me the ability to look 360° at skincare and wellness and helped develop my interests. I learnt the intricacies of formulation while studying cosmetic science, which has been invaluable in my product development and communication with chemists. My early career in beauty combined freelance treatment work with management in salons and health clubs and, later, skincare companies. This combined expertise led me to presenting on TV shopping channels, where I could delve into and share the insights to many beauty brands.

What are your top three daily rules for great skin?

My first would be to cleanse, cleanse, cleanse! After that, SPF is vital for keeping your skin healthy and protecting from external aggressors. In the evening, your routine should focus on repair, renewal and nourishment.

What inspired you to launch your own product line, Skinesis?

My clients have always been the inspiration behind my formulas. Working with skin and seeing the daily challenges that people have inspired me to find solutions that were complex in formulation but simple to use at home. My goal is to create products that will target the skin concerns I treat every day, pushing the boundaries of skincare and always thinking outside the box by combining the latest research, cosmeceutical science and botanicals. My belief that ‘cosmeceuticals can be beautiful’ inspires every formula I create.

How often would you recommend people get facials?

I would suggest every 4 weeks for the best effects. Having regular facials will give noticeable results and add a little luxury to your self-care routine.

Sarah Chapman Skinesis Overnight Facial Supplement

Are there any supplements that you swear by?

Skin that is compromised, dehydrated or simply dull usually responds quickly to an intake of omega 3 – I take these supplements daily without fail. As part of my night-time routine, I always take my Overnight Facial Supplement. It adds an essential new dimension to your anti-ageing strategy, supporting the skin from within during its most active phase of cell renewal while you sleep.

Sarah Chapman Overnight Facial supplements are coming soon online.

When do you feel you’re most confident?

I think when I know I am taking really good care of myself, and this is always reflected in my skin and body. I try to eat a balanced diet, take my supplements, do some daily exercise and get a good night’s sleep.

What are the key skincare ingredients for ultra-glowy skin?

I am a firm believer in cleanse, serum, moisturise, and never miss these steps. Cleansing is absolutely essential – clean skin is the foundation for a healthy, glowing complexion.

Personally I never go a day without using Vitamin A. I also love to give my skin a boost when it looks dull: this can be done with a peel or a Vitamin C or A treatment regime such as my 10-day Radiance Recharge System. Oil based elixir serums are essential for achieving a super glow which is why Overnight Facial is our best seller.

What makes your facial massage technique unique?

Over the years I have perfected the art of face manipulation and have seen the transformative benefits my massage techniques can achieve, even at home. My massage movements help stimulate lymphatic drainage, boost the vital supply of oxygen and nutrients to the skin and create a healthier-functioning dermis for better-looking skin whist releasing deeper muscle tension for a lifting effect.

As our skin changes through various decades, how should we adapt our skincare routines?

In our 30s, early signs of ageing begin. Invest in a serum that contains peptides to work on boosting collagen and elastin. Ensure you use Vitamin A in your routine. It’s also the time to consider using a good eye cream as ageing will begin to show around the eye area. Hydration levels can start to change in the skin too, so consider adding some hyaluronic acid and don’t forget SPF.

Hormones begin to change as we go into our 40s, so look to feed the skin from within for that extra support – think supplements. Also increase usage of Vitamin A, peptides, antioxidants and Vitamin C. This is a time to introduce stem cell technology.

In our 50s, it’s important to invest in a good night-time product – something that will work on the skin while you sleep and stimulate collagen and elastin to smooth out any fine lines and wrinkles. Keep using Vitamin A, peptides, stem cells and introduce devices such as needling and booster products to supercharge and kick start the skin. SPF should be worn daily to prevent sun damage such as age spots that work their way to the surface.

From 60, a thorough and consistent morning and evening skincare routine is essential. SPF should be worn daily, as well as a really active serum such as my Age Repair Concentrate to protect against environmental damage and continues the focus highlighted in the 50’s.

How does the Facialift work to replicate your facial massage at home?

My Facialift device is a really easy way to achieve deep results at home, with 48 massaging nodules on 8 rolling heads. Daily use reshapes, refines and tones the contours of your face, while stimulating blood flow to deliver an instant Skinesis glow.

Meghan Markle enlisted Sarah Chapman for facials in the lead up to the Royal Wedding in May 2018.

How did you gain celebrity clients?

Purely by the power of word of mouth. We’ve been really fortunate with our amazing clients, and not just the celebrities – we’ve had so many wonderful, inspirational people through our doors. Clients come in to look and feel good and to be pampered, and my team and I strive to exceed their expectations and deliver results.

What do you recommend doing on the day of a big event so that skin is radiant and makeup goes on beautifully?

Firstly, double cleanse. My Rapid Radiance cleanse can be left on the skin for 5 minutes as a mask to brighten and remove any dullness from the skin. Then for a moisture boost apply my 3D Moisture Infusion Mask, leave it on for 10-15 minutes, and massage in any excess product. Layer on serums and moisturiser and reach for something that will give the skin a brightening boost, like my Skin Tone Perfecting Booster, followed by Glow Elixir or Morning Facial and Dynamic Defence Concentrate before applying makeup.

Can you remember what was your first ever skincare purchase?

It would have to be Oil of Olay, or Oil of Ulay as it was back then. It was in a pink bottle and my mum had it, so it was a mum-inspired purchase!

How did you come up with the Skinesis philosophy?

Skinesis was born from my desire to create luxurious products to deliver clinical results at home. I noticed that the products I could rely on for results in the clinic were not aesthetically pleasing in terms of textures and smell and they came in medical-type packaging that clients wouldn’t necessarily want to add to their bathroom shelves. A synergistic mix of the most advanced active ingredients and healing, restorative botanicals, my ‘luxury meets efficacy’ ethos ensures visible results with an indulgent, luxurious at-home experience.

What is your absolute must-have product from your collection?

Overnight Facial is definitely my can’t-live-without product. It’s a serum-oil that includes high doses of retinyl palmitate (oil-soluble Vitamin A) to deliver the skin-plumping and rejuvenating effects of one of my facials overnight, so it really is beauty sleep in a bottle!

It has always been paramount to me that my products really work, that they take the best technology there is to offer and combine that with the best research available, and that they are also a luxury and a delight to use.

What products are you using in your current skincare regime?

Every morning I begin by cleansing with my Ultimate Cleanse before applying Stem Cell Collagen Activator and Age-Repair Concentrate to firm my skin and treat signs of ageing. Then I apply Dynamic Defence Concentrate as my day cream; it has SPF15 for essential daily UV protection and makes a great makeup base. However, as I am wearing less makeup at the moment, I am currently layering Skin Insurance on top, which has a beautiful adaptable tint that gives you a healthy, post-facial glow. I also use Eye Recovery around my eye contour as this lightweight formula has been specially designed to respect the delicate skin in this area. I finish with Neck and Chest Rejuvenating Complex for the décolletage.

In the evening I cleanse again. I then apply Eye Recovery around my eyes before indulging in my favourite night-time product, Overnight Facial, which hydrates, repairs, comforts and brightens my skin by morning. I apply my targeted Neck and Chest Rejuvenating Complex to treat crepiness, sagging and sun damage in this often-neglected area, and Overnight Body Treatment everywhere else. I then take my Overnight Facial Supplements, apply some hand cream and foot cream, spritz my pillow with sleep spray, then am off the bed for the ultimate beauty sleep!

Chelsea, London, United Kingdom.

Where are you in the world while we are in lockdown?

I am currently in Chelsea in London with my partner Simon and our sweet Italian Greyhound Sidney. It’s home, so it feels safe and happy.

How are you spending your time at home?

I am currently really enjoying having some thinking time and am brewing up lots of new product formulation ideas, so I’m reading clinical data on ingredients and research documents.

My favourite podcast would have to be ‘How I built this’ by NBPR Guy Raz. It’s a fascinating insight into how today’s leading entrepreneurs built their businesses, the challenges they faced and how they overcame them. I am also listening to more music being at home so much.

Like everyone I have been watching huge amounts of the news to keep up-to-date with everything, but to step away from that occasionally, I have been watching The Morning Show on Apple TV with Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston

Have you ever been to Ireland?

I lived in Lisburn in Northern Ireland as a child for four years – and even picked up the accent! I absolutely love Ireland and have so many fond childhood memories of growing up there.

How do you feel about launching at Brown Thomas?

I am super excited! Brown Thomas is the most beautiful lifestyle store and so I am thrilled to be part of it. I cannot wait to see my products on the shelves and have an excuse to visit Ireland again.

Sarah Chapman is available online and in our Brown Thomas Dublin store now.
