FORWAND THINKING WITH TOM DIXON
Legendary furniture and lighting designer, Tom Dixon answers some quick-fire questions about his disdain for disposables, his sustainable design processes, and why his designs stand the test of time.
HE DISLIKES DISPOSABLE CUPS
"I’m like everybody else a victim of modern rituals – I check my phone before getting out of bed, but my favourite ritual is I still like a tea break like most proper Englishmen for 15 minutes at 4pm. I’m interested in how tea is central to so many cultures not just in the UK but in China, India, South America and Japan. Our design is meant to put back some formality into the ritual as the ceremony has been eroded by too many bad practises like having tea and coffee in take-away disposable cups for instance."
HE FOCUSES ON LONGEVITY
"We are lucky to be working in a field where if you make something properly with care and good materials, then people can keep the product for a lifetime – I still have my Great-Grandmother’s Louis XV desk which she had bought from an antique shop when it was already 100 years old, so if you get it right then your product will be naturally sustainable."
HIS WORK IS DISPLAYED IN THE BEST DESIGN MUSEUMS
"It is a privilege to have my functional sculptures be recognised and considered an investment by so many design museums. I spent so much time in museums as a kid so it’s pretty amazing to be part of collections all over the world."
