THE PULLMAN CARRIAGE, GLENLO ABBEY, GALWAY

Inside the Carriage: Standing gracefully in the grounds of Glenlo Abbey Hotel in Clifden, the Pullman train carriage overlooks the old Clifden to Galway railway line, which passed through the estate until its removal in 1935. The Pullman has experienced a very varied life. Built in 1927, its routes included the Monaco/Istanbul/St. Petersburg runs, and also the Brighton run. In 1974, it played a starring role in the Agatha Christie film Murder on the Orient Express – that never-to-be-forgotten movie, directed by Sidney Lumet, and starring a host of greats, including Albert Finney, Ingrid Bergman, Sean Connery, Vanessa Redgrave, and Lauren Bacall.

What to expect: Converted into a wonderful restaurant car without losing any of its original character, the Pullman Restaurant allows you to step back in time and dine aboard the famous train. Book a private booth or sit by the window with spectacular views overlooking Lough Corrib and imagine yourself as a stylish hero or heroine in an Agatha Christie novel.
