PROTECTING THE IRREPLACEABLE WITH PATAGONIA
One of the first major sustainable brands to hit the mainstream, Patagonia has led the way in corporate responsibility since the 1980s. Find out more about its trailblazing founders, 1% For The Planet, and County Clare’s own Patagonia ambassador, big wave surfer Patch Wilson.
1% FOR THE PLANET
Founders of Patagonia, Yvon Chouinard, and Craig Mathews met fly-fishing on the Madison River in Montana and it was on a returning visit to this scenic spot that the first seeds of 1% For The Planet were sown. Since 1985, Patagonia has pledged 1% of sales to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment, amounting to over $100 million in donations to date to environmental groups. This staggering figure has been more than doubled from funds raised by a non-profit corporation set up by Yvon and Craig in 2002 to encourage other businesses to do the same.
Famed hell-man on the West Coast’s infamous slabs and big wave spots including Riley's and Aileen’s, Patch Wilson moved from Cornwall fifteen years ago to make his beloved Clare coastline his home. Since then, he’s been weathering the North Atlantic winters here, and holding out for the occasional glimpse of magic among the madness. Check out his new clip released this year by Patagonia entitled “Framed” that showcases some of Irelands best swells.
I’ve been gathering footage for the last three or four years - all my best waves from around home in the West of Ireland with Lahinch-based bodyboarder and filmmaker Joao Tudella, a younger guy who is super talented. It can be a hard existence here in winter, but there are some great moments in amongst itPatch Wilson
Patagonia is coming to Brown Thomas Dublin and online this September, keep an eye on our social channels for the latest updates.
