John and Clara Molloy, co-founders of Memo Paris and Hermetica.

Now based a long way from Tipperary, John runs Memo Paris and Hermetica from his new home in Switzerland with his partner in business and love, his wife Clara. When pressed on how best to describe his fragrance collections John starts with Memo, “its name is short for memory, it is all about travel, freedom and experience. Every fragrance is named after a place in the world that inspires its composition.” As for Hermetica “it’s about green consciousness: from the composition (alcohol-free, molecular recycled ingredients), to the bottle (made of reusable glass, packed without plastic) and the sale (for each fragrance bought, one is tree planted). Green as a value and also our source of sensual creations.”

With travel being at a standstill, dreaming of beautiful destinations and being transported through the senses to other places is more important than ever. For John “perfume is travel itself.” He continues “It’s a pass for remembering a place, a moment, a person, and that’s the beauty of it.” When asked what his first scent memories were John recalls “Irish air, Irish grass, Irish horses, Irish land. I’m definitely imbued with every Irish raw material.” John chooses Irish Leather when he wants to take a sensual journey back to his childhood home adding “it plays a comforting and reassuring role. You feel yourself. It gives you the feeling that you’re ready to embrace the world, even if you just go from one room to another.”

Argentina, the latest release from Memo Paris coming soon to Brown Thomas.

Scent is important for John in these strange times as a link to travel but also the arts and culture, his main influences, musing “this is what makes life exciting, interesting, especially in these days when museums, movie theatres, and concerts are not available. We have to preserve in people’s mind the urge to create and revisit when we can.” Fragrance is also important for romance, John recommends “our newest scent Argentina, it’s like a tango dance between the rose and the oud.” The perfect choice for lovers in lockdown.
