INSIDE THE ATELIER OF LOLA JAMES HARPER

Like most creatives worth their salt Rami doesn’t fit nicely into any one box. He is a storyteller of the senses, mostly through photography, music, writing, movie directing and, unusually, also perfumery.

He fine-tuned his nose with a little help from some of the industry's finest such as Pierre Bourdon, one of the legendary perfumers behind Frédéric Malle. Pierre was the creator of French Lover and Cool Water for Davidoff which revolutionised men's fragrance in the 1980s, and his protégé Benoist Lapouza is the author of By Killian Angels’ Share and several scents for Fendi for men. Rami adds “We met when I was 26, and for a few years they shared with me their love and understanding of the fragrance art. Since then I have had the chance to meet other great perfumers and to fall even more in love with perfumery and its poetry.”

Rami paints us a picture of his Parisian atelier, “it is in the Batignolles neighbourhood, two floors filled with scents, sounds, photography, words, plants, writing and painting tools, music instruments and a good coffee machine. The ground floor has an archive of road-trip photography hanging, a turntable always playing, a big table with some ink and brushes to draw some mindsets on paper, a nice space to welcome friends, a console with our full collection of Lola James Harper candles and fragrances and so many shelves with my archives of scents of places I love that I will use someday. Downstairs there is a TV room to watch our movie WITH and to edit our new movies, and next to it is our music studio with guitars, drums and microphones to play and record together.”

Redefining the spaces within our home throughout our day can be challenging, especially when it comes to relaxation. Rami advocates “regressing to a nice chill moment with the help of the Promenade candle based on the Vincennes woods in the Parisian suburbs to just remember those quiet moments in nature.”

Finding your creative spark under the current limitations can be tough. Rami muses “it depends on the type of creativity I want to boost, but usually, I would light the Vinyl Store candle and put rock or hip hop on vinyl super loud.“

For Rami “The most romantic scent would be Just Say Yes eau de toilette a composition of rose and cardamom. For an at-home date night, Rami suggests that we “think about the scent, the music, the light and all the elements that catch the eyes. There is no good smell or good taste or good music or a good outfit but there is definitely the fragrance, taste, music, and outfit that share our real face.”
