ARTFULLY CHARLOTTE

Artist Charlotte Posner is as positive, enthusiastic and colourful as her creations. We chatted to the 31-year-old about her latest and most exciting collaboration to date, her very own bespoke wrapping paper for this year’s Marvel Room.

Charlotte’s wrapping paper design for the Marvel Room

When it was suggested I create wrapping paper for the Marvel Room I couldn’t wait to get drawing. It’s really a privilege to be featured amongst so many incredible brands. The whole process of collaborating with Brown Thomas has been wonderful - I can’t wait to be part of the Christmas experience.

Charlotte certainly has plenty to be cheery about. Besides her Marvel Room collaboration, the young artist has had a rollercoaster career to date. Having been encouraged to draw and paint from an early age by her parents, she went on to work with oil paint at the age of 14 and eventually graduated from Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art and Design. Passion and hard work are certainly important ingredients in her recipe to success, but Charlotte struck a special chord with audiences online in 2013 when she designed a few very famous characters that have set her apart from other aspiring artists. “Ah, yes my Posner Pop Dolls! I painted five women (my lucky number) and gave them ice-cream cone bodies with ice-cream flavour heads and the reaction on social media was overwhelming. I began to design dolls for big name brands and I would get in touch with them personally through Twitter. They all reposted the work, and suddenly I had requests from more brands to create bespoke dolls for them. From there, the appeal of my dolls just grew and grew.”

As for her Marvel Room collaboration, she says the best part is seeing the process go from conceptual design to the real thing. “I’m so happy with the paper and love the thought of gifts wrapped up in Christmas Pop Dolls under the tree. I wanted the wrapping paper to be a little piece of art, inspired by everything I love about Christmas.”

Her process is a thorough one, starting with a sketch and a rough outline in pencil. Then she uses traditional dip-pen and ink for drawing the Pop Doll outlines and finally adds colour with acrylic and watercolour paint. The result is a piece of wrapping paper that, dare we say, is far too pretty to tear open or throw away. Besides the paper, though, Charlotte has a selection of her own products available in the Marvel Room, too. “My collection includes framed hand-signed artwork, leather goods, luxury stationery, water bottles, scented candles, accessories and a Christmas linen gift range. Each item in the collections is a little piece of my art, from my studio to your home. The hand poured, beeswax scented candles come wrapped in a Pop Doll artwork painted to denote each of the three scents; Tuberose & Ylang Ylang, Oud & Agarwood and Lemongrass & Mint. There’s something for everybody.”

Before we leave her go, we ask her how she feels about now being a part of the Christmas experience in Dublin. “I have fallen in love with Ireland. It’s so full of inspiration for me and I have found everyone so welcoming, friendly and full of fun. Dublin itself has such elegance and warmth,” much like Charlotte herself.
