MR. SELF-PORTRAIT
We meet the wonder-label's founder, Han Chong, to talk about festive dressing, how he's flown to the top of every It girl's want-list in just five years and what's next for the fashion industry...
So many brands take a lifetime to gain kudos and build a solid customer base who remain loyal no matter what. Self-Portrait, however, became an instant hit when it burst onto the scene in 2013. The selection of beautiful occasion-wear laser-cut dresses, that looked high-end and yet were affordably priced, struck a chord with women all over the world. That was five years ago, and today Self-Portrait remains one of the most iconic and instantly recognisable labels to emerge in the last decade.

For founder Han Chong, his mission with Self-Portrait was always clear. “From the beginning, we were trying to break down walls in the industry by creating beautiful, high-quality clothes for a contemporary price point. It was a challenge. We were so lucky to have the amazing response we did from our customers and the industry. The collections were so small in the beginning. Since then we’ve experimented with new fabrics and prints, and slowly expanded the range to include more separates, outerwear.”

Han is dedicated to the women he dresses. He mans the Self-Portrait Instagram account himself (@mrselfportrait), something he is very passionate about. “Having an honest relationship with the women I dress through social media is such a massive part of what I do. Customers give me so much feedback in the comments and it has an impact on how I design. I want to make sure they feel the love in the work I do.”

And love those designs, his customers certainly do. The Self-Portrait Instagram page is littered with charismatic, stylish women wearing SP with pride and individuality. Beyoncé is just one of the major celebrities who has been spotted in Self-Portrait. “I’m still shocked and excited when I see a new celebrity wearing one of my designs,” says Han, “and I have to pinch myself to see if it’s real. I’ve always believed fashion should be more inclusive. Luxury shouldn’t only be for the privileged few, so we work hard to produce quality at a contemporary price point. More people are discovering the brand every day and it’s so interesting to see how they choose to wear it.”

So, with the party season looming and festive dressing on everyone’s mind, we want to know what the Self-Portrait girl will be wearing this season. “Her party wardrobe this season is electric and bold, playing with striking prints and rich velvets. To fit in with the busy lifestyle of a modern woman, we designed pieces that can perfectly transition from day-to-night. I particularly love the Shooting Star Satin Embellished Top and Tiered Star Satin Printed Midi Dress. That’s my one go-to piece for anyone wondering what to wear to that big party this Christmas.”
