THE UNMISSABLE FASHION EXHIBITIONS OF 2019
We’ve rounded up the most hotly anticipated fashion exhibitions happening this year across the globe that are worth adding to your calendar now. From a look into the archives of one of the top houses of haute couture to the unveiling of this year’s Met Gala exhibition, these are the shows to see and be seen at in 2019…
Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams at The Victoria & Albert Museum, London
The Victoria & Albert Museum will play host to the largest collection of Dior garments ever exhibited. Displaying over 500 items from the back catalogue designed by the couturier himself and subsequent creative directors including Yves Saint Laurent, John Galliano, Raf Simons, up to current designs by Maria Grazia Chiuri. Time to form an orderly queue!
Exhibition dates: 2nd February – 14th July 2019.
Camp: Notes on Fashion at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
The curators of this exhibition looked to the writings of Susan Sontag ‘Notes on Camp’, to form the framework of the show that inspires the theme for Met Gala 2019. More is most definitely more with embellishment at the core of this year’s selection. Who will rise to the challenge for the red carpets most show-stopping extravaganza this May? Our bets are on Lady Gaga!
Exhibition dates: 9th May – 8th September 2019.
Margiela: The Hermès Years at The Artipelag Contemporary Culture Center, Stockholm
If you missed your chance to see this incredible exhibition in Les Arts Décoratifs in Paris then you’re in luck! This retrospective that shines a light on one of the most exciting and surprising collaborations in fashion history will be on show once again, this time in Sweden. Here is your last chance to see some of the most influential collections on modern day fashion and to catch a glimpse into the workings of the man and the myth that is Martin Margiela.
Exhibition dates: 26th October 2018 – 10th March 2019.
The Royal Wedding Dress, Windsor Castle and Holyrood Palace, Scotland.
Now is your chance to see that Givenchy wedding gown up close. Clare Waight Keller’s creation is the jewel in the crown of this exhibition at Windsor Castle, on show until 17th February 2019, it will then travel to Holyrood Palace in Scotland this summer.
Exhibition dates: 26th October 2018 – 10th March 2019 at Windsor Castle, Windsor and 14th June – 6th October 2019 at Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh.
COUTURE EXHIBITION AT NEWBRIDGE MUSEUM OF STYLE ICONS, KILDARE
Including garments from the fashion houses of Dior, Hermès and Roberta di Camerino this exhibition is focused on couture from 1950s-1960s. Highlights include a Givenchy green suit worn by Princess Grace of Monaco on a state visit to Ireland in 1961, an ivory silk cloqué Balenciaga gown worn by Ava Gardner and Audrey Hepburn’s full-skirted floral silk dress from Funny Face, 1957. A classic collection right on our doorstep.
