TRENDS TO WEAR THIS SPRING
The runways of New York, London, Milan and Paris showcased a colourful, vibrant and versatile spring season. Whether you love to get All Dolled Up, or you have a Down To Earth style, spring is as diverse as the world we live in. Our Fashion Director, Shelly Corkery, rounds up nine of this season’s trends you need to know. Which one will you take for a spin?
1960s
The Mood: Designers are going back to the 1960s for spring. Mod mini skirts and dresses rocked the runways adding a playful update to the must-have midi length trend of previous seasons. Shiny satins and silks added a feminine touch to the look, while hyper bright hues of red and pink elevated the playful swinging sixties vibe.
The Catwalk Muses: Miuccia Prada's penchant for the era was explored at both Prada and Miu Miu. The sixties surf girl took centre stage at Prada with printed neoprene tops, tie dye prints and bicycle shorts while slip skirts, crushed cocktail dresses and lots of sparkle appeared at Miu Miu.
ALL DOLLED UP
The Mood: Maximalists take note, this summer there's no need to hold back, this trend is all about over-the-top-florals and prints worked with exquisite ruffle dresses and voluminous coats, the more dramatic the silhouette the better!
The Catwalk Muses: Richard Quinn paved the way for the trend with his masterful floral dresses and clashing polka dot prints all layered with leopard print coats. 1980s and 1990s style party dresses were also a key silhouette with bright clashing prints and asymmetric necklines, Donatella created the hottest offering at Versace.
DOWN TO EARTH
The Mood: Earth tones set the mood for the summer months. Seen at both Loewe and Dior, fluid silk blouses and dresses were shown in cream and khaki, sand and tan. Also what stood out at the shows was a need for clothes with a conscience, designer's minds were focused on simplicity and quality.
The Catwalk Muses: Jil Sander unveiled a collection of exquisite pieces, from luxurious silk shirts in soft tones of blue, to short cotton dresses in pale shell colours.
GARDEN PARTY
The Mood: This season offers a beautiful bunch of floral prints to update your look from sprigged buds to microscopic blooms scattered over light grounds of sheers and silks.
The Catwalk Muses: Sarah Burton was inspired by the blooming hedgerows of the English West Country which resulted in an exquisite selection of floral silk dresses in bold and bright colours at Alexander McQueen. Grassy tinsel dresses and flowerbed-inspired tops take from the Italian countryside at Dolce & Gabbana, while Valentino worked wildly joyful patterns and colours reminiscent of work by Matisse and Gauguin.
NOMADIC COOL
The Mood: Evolving from the Winter Nomad theme of last season, Nomadic Cool celebrates easy and relaxed summer dressing. Sweet paisley-printed dresses and decorative patchworks were seen across the collections.
The Catwalk Muses: Natacha Ramsay-Levi at Chloé was inspired by the brand's original DNA, merging hippie modernism and New Age bohemianism with shades of nude on printed shirts and pleated dresses. Relaxed holiday dressing was the muse at Australian brand Zimmermann, where soft hued midi dresses contrasted with high necklines and long sleeves.
TAILORING
The Mood: A nod to female empowerment the tailored structured jacket dominated the catwalks. Vibrant suits with 1980s power shoulders are a must-have for this trend and are seen at Balenciaga, Victoria Beckham and Alexander McQueen.
The Catwalk Muses: Demna Gvasalia’s collection at Balenciaga led the way with striking tailored jackets and coats featuring nipped-in waists and strong shoulders. Sarah Burton’s collection at Alexander McQueen was an ode to womanhood and included the house’s classic sharp tailored jackets and trousers inspired by the female form.
TIMELESS MINIMALISM
The Mood: Simplicity is key for spring with designers tapping into the demand for transitional staples and elevated basics. A refreshing contrast to the hyper bright and floral themes of the season, Timeless Minimalism showcases androgynous tailoring and pared-back separates with delicate tones of pale yellow, soft khaki and mid-tone blue.
The Catwalk Muses: On the tenth anniversary of her hugely successful eponymous brand, Victoria Beckham was inspired by minimalism itself, showcasing a sleek collection of tailored suits and tunics in soft hues of white and pale pink.
ALL THE TRIMMINGS
The Mood: Dries Van Noten's old-school couture references sent an audible ripple of excitement at his show and at Valentino, Pierpaolo Piccioli received a standing ovation.
The Catwalk Muses: It's no surprise then to find out that Dries Van Noten’s muse for spring was to give women something that they enjoy wearing and Piccioli's was the idea that we are - “free to wear whatever you want to wear“.
UTILITY
The Mood: The new utility positions the cargo pant as the key piece of the season - the update is we now see it worked in high tech fabrics yet still retaining its easy-to-wear structure. Alongside cargo options, pared-back tailored trousers and jackets with zips and hardware elevate the look to a smart business-casual aesthetic.
The Catwalk Muses: Stella McCartney was inspired by the idea of elevating what we think of comfort clothes to something truly sophisticated. Think: tie-dye tees, tie-dye jeans and denim boiler-suits. Isabel Marant also inspired by utility looked to the last days of disco for inspiration combining denim with high shine fabrics.
