CULTURAL KINGS

Meet the young men blazing a trail for Ireland in the creative space.

Ireland has always punched above its weight when it comes to noteworthy names in global culture and now a crop of young men look to raise the bar in 2019.

OISÍN MURPHY, MODEL

Irish athlete and model Oisín Murphy made GAA en vogue, literally, when a snap of him in full kit featured in the French fashion bible. The 19 year old has aspirations to be photographed alongside lofty names such as Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid, and given his current career trajectory, we wouldn’t bet against him.

JAFARIS, RAPPER

Jafaris (aka Percy Chamburuka) was already a recognisable face thanks to John Carney’s hit movie, Sing Street, when he began his career as part of Ireland’s thriving urban music scene. The rapper and poet has just released his debut album, Stride as he continues to build an audience in Ireland and abroad, thanks to his tracks being shared and streamed on Spotify.

BARRY KEOGHAN, ACTOR

Born and raised in Dublin’s inner city, Barry Keoghan has already amassed an impressive body of work for his 26 years. Working with the likes of Colin Farrell, Christopher Nolan and Nicole Kidman, the actor has stolen scenes from veterans twice his age. His raw talent most recently lead to the lead role in comic book adaptation ‘Y’ which will feature Keoghan in one of the lead roles. The big budget Fox series will land in early 2020.

MAVERICK SABRE, SINGER/SONGWRITER

Another rapper who continues to impress on the Irish and UK scene since his debut in 2008 as a teenager, is London Born, Wexford raised, Maverick Sabre. While it wasn’t until 2011 until he released his own single, ‘Let Me Go’, his debut album ‘Lonely are the Brave’ followed, as too did a dedicating, adoring fan base. His new opus, ‘When I Wake Up’ drops this month.

BLINDBOY, SATIRIST & PODCASTER

As the ascent of the podcast continues, so too does the rise of Ireland's biggest podcasting star, Blindboy. Initially finding fame as one half of talented, outspoken duo, The Rubberbandits, Blindboy has since proved himself an intellectual with a penchant for deep conversation. The Limerick man could easily have leaned entirely on his comedic abilities, but instead chooses to discuss challenging social issues, and has bagged extremely impressive guests in the process – check out his recent chat with Oscar winner, Spike Lee.

SHANE O'DRISCOLL, ARTIST

A scroll through Cork artist Shane O’Driscoll’s instagram will underline a talent that many in his field have recognised for some time. The print artist has a unique, shape-driven, graphic style and was recently commissioned by The Devlin to create five pieces for the Ranelagh hotel; while his work also features as part of a permanent collection at The National Gallery of Ireland.
