SUMMER OF LOVESHACKFANCY
With the arrival of bohemian-luxe label, LoveShackFancy to our Dublin store, creative director Rebecca Hessel Cohen tells us about her Irish icons and reveals the real role her mum plays in making her dresses.
Scrolling through the LoveShackFancy spring summer collection online is like reading a fairytale. Each floral-printed silk-georgette maxi dress, frilled blouse and chiffon midi skirt tells a story about the woman who wears it. She’s on a gondola in Venice at sunset, or horse-riding through the prairies of Montana. The charm of LoveShackFancy’s clothes is that they are truly otherworldly, romantic in every way a piece of clothing can make one look and feel.
The woman behind the emerging label is Rebecca Hessel Cohen who, having searched high and low to secure the perfect bridesmaids' dresses for her wedding, decided to design her own. Next thing she knew, friends and acquaintances were requesting more of her vintage-inspired pieces, and LoveShackFancy was born. So, first things first, what does that name mean exactly?
It’s a perfectly imperfect mix of shack and chateau,” Rebecca explains, “It stands for a connection to a dreamy and romantic past.
It seems her mum may have played a role in the name, too. As her biggest muse, Rebecca’s mother inspired her long before her label came to be. “My mother is my hero and my biggest inspiration, alongside my daughter Scarlett and Stella. She always taught me to work hard and calls herself the senior intern! We’ve collected vintage our whole lives. She would style different houses and call them love shacks. She had the name, and then when I was starting the business, I was thinking of a million names and nothing felt right except for LoveShackFancy.”
Looking at her collection is making us itch for summertime glamour. So, what is her dream summer escape? “Getting to have that perfect mix between hot summer nights in the city and beach weekend running around barefoot on the beach with my girls,” she shares, and as for her packing essentials, “A white Victorian dress (great to layer over jeans or throw on with a bikini), a pair of our LoveShackFancy Supergas, and a wicker market bag for baguettes and flowers from the local market.”
It’s easy to see Rebecca’s love of bygone times in her dresses, and she embraces vintage in a way that is all her own. She names Saoirse Ronan, Caitriona Balfe and Eve Hewson as Irish style icons she would love to see in her pieces, and feels strongly that her clothes are to be worn and enjoyed by every woman, “We dress all ages from one to 80, so I love to see how each generation styles their pieces and how they like to wear specific styles. It brings me such joy that our brand offers something for all women, no matter what age. We feel honoured that we’ve been able to create a whole magical world inclusive of all women and a brand that we hope inspires women to embrace their femininity and style in their own romantic way.” Some might say, that’s the LoveShackFancy way.
LoveShackFancy is available online and in our Dublin store now.
