The Pursuit of The Perfect Night’s Sleep

Restorative, comforting and full of wonderful dreams… We all love to have a great night's sleep, and just what we need in these unsettling times. The benefits are apparent and immediate – clearer thoughts, increased energy, higher spirits.

Transforming your bedroom can help achieve this wonderful goal and even a few little changes can send us happily off to the Land of Nod. And with that in mind, we’ve put together some of our top tips to help you achieve that perfect night’s sleep.

Choose Your Bedlinen

1. Choose your bedlinen with care

Bedlinen should be smooth and cool to the touch. Between 300 and 600 thread count is ideal, as long as it is made in Europe. The best bedlinen comes from Italy, Portugal or Switzerland. Designed from luxurious cottons and providing the ultimate in comfort, Piubelle is still made by the same family in the north of Portugal. One of the world’s most famous luxury bedlinen brands, Frette, hails from Milan and is a favourite of royal families and rock stars alike.

Top tips: Deciding between Percale or Sateen Cotton?

Choose percale cotton if you prefer a cold crisp feel to your sheets – it provides a smooth and comfortable feel ensuring a restful night's sleep.

Sateen cotton is pure cotton that has been produced in a way that creates a silky soft feel and a higher shine - if you like to slip into bed and feel surrounded by warmth and softness, then cotton sateen is for you.

Clutter Free Space

2. Create a stylish, yet clutter free space

Now that we have more time at home, it’s a great opportunity to examine what we’ve accumulated in our bedrooms.

Create a restful and calming atmosphere by clearing surfaces, except for perhaps a special candle or treasured item. Close all the cupboard doors, roll up the yoga mat and put it under the bed until tomorrow, dim the lighting and use a beautiful room spray or diffuser.

This season the colours are subtle, muted and classic. Pale golds and silver greys, ice blue and the palest celadon green feature, and bedlinen is all about a restful new colour called 'milk' – all gentle and beautifully relaxing.

Invest In An Excellent Bed Pillow

3. Invest in an excellent pillow (or two!)

Fluffy or firm, well filled or flat – we all have our favourites. Pillows should always be filled with at least 80% pure down or one of the new high-tech, natural and sustainable fillings like Tencel (made from tree bark, yet incredibly comfortable and perfect for anyone with allergies).

A prestigious brand popular in luxurious 5-star hotels worldwide, Brinkhaus, are famously comfortable and retain their shape and depth for approximately 5 – 7 years.

Their most exclusive pillow is the Chalet 100% Siberian Sticky Down - the fluffiest, softest pillow encased in the finest sateen - exclusive to Bottom Drawer at Brown Thomas. If you prefer anti-allergy pillows, the famous Bauschi Lux pillow, with its baffled edge is incredibly comfortable, particularly for side sleepers.

Top tip: Don't forget to place your pillow in a pillow protector, a cotton outer zipped casing that will keep your new pillow clean and fresh.

Set The Mood

4. Set the mood

Turning off computers, TVs and phones at least an hour before bed is a great way to switch off and prepare your body and mind for sleeping.

Setting the mood for your bedtime routine by lighting a candle or using a diffuser with essential oils can be really beneficial. We’d recommend a few drops of NEOM Organics essential oils, along with their tranquillity candles. And don’t forget to ensure the room is completely dark and quiet, as melatonin is stimulated by darkness.

Now lie back and relax… your bedroom is ready for a fabulous night's sleep.
