SUSTAINABLE STRIDES
We take an exclusive look at the sustainable advances being made at Burberry, Eileen Fisher, and GANNI. These three fashion giants share a common thread; their energy and attention toward more sustainable fashion practices both in-house and beyond is firmly on the agenda.

A FORWARD FOCUS AT EILEEN FISHER
For Amy Hall, Director of Social Consciousness at Eileen Fisher, achieving B Corporation certification was a game-changer, "Our brand has been committed to sustainability since our founding in 1984, but over the years, our commitment to sustainability has deepened. Receiving certification that rates us as one of about 2,500 companies worldwide for conducting our business with attention to environmental and human impact is one of our greatest achievements to date." Eileen Fisher’s collections of simple yet sophisticated separates have always been made using the highest quality fabrics, but upping the ante as ever, the brand has committed to ensuring all their cotton and linen will be organic by 2020 and are determined to stop using rayon in exchange for lyocell or recycled polyester. "We're focused on our Vision 2020 goals around materials, water, carbon and conscious business practices amongst others."
We must all get into the habit of reading labels – and asking questions. By asking questions, you are telling the brands that you care about that issue. It’s important to have your voice heard.

CONSCIOUS CREATING AT BURBERRY
Meanwhile, at Burberry, Responsibility Programme Director Jocelyn Wilkinson is setting unprecedented new goals when it comes to the company's environmental impact. “One of our key sustainability goals between now and 2022 is to become carbon neutral in our own operational energy use. We've set energy targets for all our stores globally and over the last year, we've established a network of Responsibility Champions in key stores, who support retail teams.” Straightforward changes like switching to LED lighting in their Regency Street store and encouraging employees to implement reusable cups are just some of the operational changes afoot, but what about the fashion itself? “We have targets to procure 100% of our cotton through the Better Cotton Initiative and to source 100% of our leather from certified tanneries by 2022.”

GOING GREEN AT GANNI
Copenhagen-based label GANNI's environmental manifesto starts with perhaps one of the most important truths about the entire sustainable movement; "Being honest is more important to us than being perfect and we strive to do better every day." Their approach to improving coupled with an open conversation about how clothing is produced and made is helping bring clarity to a previously murky world. "We take a holistic approach, looking at everything we can, from the materials we source to make our clothes to how our factories operate and we’re always thinking about what impact our production has on the environment." Since 2016, they've been tracking their carbon footprint, and became a signatory of the Global Fashion Agenda in 2017, with the aim to have a circular approach in business activities and global operations.
