The first official reference to the brand name Redbreast appeared in August 1912, when Gilbeys was selling Redbreast JJ Liqueur Whiskey 12 Years Old, described as one of its ‘famous brands’. Redbreast itself refers to the robin redbreast, and the name is attributed to the then Managing Director of Gilbeys, an avid bird fancier. The whiskey will often be two or three years older than the 12 years, depending on how the Master Blender wishes the final product to taste. The portion of the whiskey that is removed from the sherry butts is visibly red-amber in colour – a sight to behold. Every Redbreast cask is visually inspected and nosed prior to bottling.
