OUR FASHION DIRECTOR'S MOODBOARDS FOR THE SEASON

Your indispensable guide to the new season’s most-wanted fashion as selected by our Fashion Director Shelly Corkery.

This autumn winter is a very new season, the shows which were held in February fell just before restrictions were put in place. Since then there has been great changes not only in the world but in fashion and how we dress. That said the trends of the season show some incredibly wearable, classic pieces as well as fabulous, awe-inspiring fantasy fashion to keep our spirits lifted. We say, never underestimate the power of fabulous looks from the catwalks of New York, London, Milan and Paris.

Adaptability is the key trend this season and we are very agile.

1. TRY SOME SARTORTIAL SUITING

THE MOOD: Even if you’re still WFH, a tailoring look or two won't hurt. Try some tailoring with a more relaxed, feminine finish. Tweed is always a great autumnal choice, see Victoria Beckham for some amazing structured versions, while ultra-modern power suiting at Bottega Veneta will reign supreme in your wardrobe for seasons to come.

THE KEY BRANDS: Bottega Veneta, Jil Sander, Victoria Beckham.

2. RECONSTRUCTED LEGACY IS THE WAY FORWARD

THE MOOD: We say reconstruct and reinterpret your look for the future and choose timeless pieces this season. Sustainability was at the helm of collections at JW Anderson, Dries Van Noten and Victoria Beckham. Victoria Beckham offered an homage to heritage with kilt-style skirts paired with check shirts. Jonathan Anderson notably described his collection as “Nouveau Chic”, with the turn of the new decade his collection offered clarity and variety in a sophisticated and feminine way.

THE KEY BRANDS: Bottega Veneta, Dries Van Noten, Jil Sander, JW Anderson, Valentino, Victoria Beckham.

3. THERE'S KNITWEAR EVERYWHERE

THE MOOD: A staple for the winter season, knitwear is just the thing to cosy up in these strange times, comfort is key for this trend as our relationship with our home grows. Fine to heavy-gauge sweaters, cardigans and separates were seen at Bottega Veneta, Victoria Beckham, Isabel Marant, Nanushka and Jil Sander. Autumnal hues was the colour palette of choice for designers, as shades of rich brown, caramel and grey donned the runway.

THE MOOD: Find your feminine form, but with a minimal aesthetic this season. Feminist themes were noted across the collections, most notably at Maria Grazia Chiuri’s collection at Dior where the designer used her runway to amplify feminist ideas. Miuccia Prada’s collection at Prada was also a celebration of femininity, with Miuccia working feminine glamour in an optimistic and uplifting way.

THE MOOD: Black returns, with a head-to-toe look opening the shows at Balenciaga, Valentino, and Dolce & Gabbana. Victoria Beckham welcomed the return of black with skin-baring necklines. Demna Gvasalia’s show at Balenciaga included dark characters dressed head to toe in black. Gvasalia notably said: “It’s the blackest show I ever did”.

6. FALL FOR SOFT RETRO

THE MOOD: Be inspired for a nostalgic 1970s flower power mood enhanced with autumnal tones and winter blooms. Dries Van Noten perfectly captures the sensibility with mystical floral suits in tones of purple and green balanced with nostalgic 1970s blooms on shirts and jackets. Valentino adds a sophisticated touch with magnificent black dresses finished with blooms in shades of green, red, grey and silver. While Saint Laurent explored the dark side with black latex trousers and velvet-collared blazers with matching jabot neckline blouses which are just the ticket for after-dark.

THE KEY BRANDS: Dries Van Noten, Valentino, Khaite, Saint Laurent.

7. EXPLORE TECH-TILITY

THE MOOD: Tech-tility explores the space between the virtual world and real life. Designers took a fantastical and fictional take on their collections with futuristic aesthetics, structured silhouettes and conceptual coats. Exaggerated structured shoulders appeared at Balenciaga, while magnificent fringe finished coats donned the runway at Bottega Veneta.

8. BRING ON THE FANCY DRESS

THE MOOD: All dressed up with nowhere to go, well not quite, bring on the party culture without the party by dressing up. Sarah Burton’s show at Alexander McQueen worked a magnificent structured suit in vibrant red while Dries Van Noten captured this mood with feather-finished coats and skirts in shades of emerald green and deep purple, a nod to the glam 1970s and high 1980s. Trapeze dresses in luxurious velvet donned the runway at Khaite, while metallic dresses at Rotate add a playful finish to this theme.

THE KEY BRANDS: Dries Van Noten, Khaite, Alexander McQueen, Rotate.
