WHAT KATE SOMERVILLE DID NEXT...

The revolutionary skincare brand has just landed in Brown Thomas, we meet the legendary founder.

A true trailblazer, Kate Somerville began her career as an aesthetician in LA and then launched her brand from her cult skin-care treatments she offered out of her clinic. She talks to us on what motivates and inspires her skincare routines, and on how we can and should grow old gracefully.

It all began in LA, a pioneer, Somerville combined facials with medical skincare, it was a groundbreaking decision which was to garner her a host of loyal fans from Demi Moore, Kate Hudson and Eva Mendes. Here she chats through some of her most iconic products from her ExfoliKate® Intensive to her DermalQuench Wrinkle Warrior® and more.

Kate Somerville ExfoliKate® Intensive

How to ExfoliKate®?

Kate explains, "We have a few game changers for skin. Specifically, ExfoliKate® Intensive, which is one of the first clinic treatments we ever bottled. It’s this amazing green exfoliating scrub chock full of clinically formulated AHAs and fruit enzymes to deliver three effective forms of exfoliation – chemical to loosen dead skin cells from the surface, physical to slough away the loosened dead, dry, hard surface skin cells, and enzymatic which is like little Pac-Men eating away the debris to reveal younger, fresher, glowing skin underneath. Just two minutes twice a week and you’re guaranteed to see improved texture, pores and radiance. It also removes that top layer of dead skin cells which allows the rest of the products and ingredients you apply after it to be more effective."2000182476

For me, beauty is about being healthy and at peace with yourself. You see it in a crinkly smile. A warm embrace. A soulful gaze.

Kate Somerville DermalQuench Wrinkle Warrior®

An UncompliaKated Skincare Routine

On her skincare routine she says, "In the morning, I cleanse with ExfoliKate® Cleanser. You can use it at night, but I prefer to use it in the morning for a radiant glow throughout the day. Post-shower, I apply DermalQuench Wrinkle Warrior® to provide a super-hydrating base that plumps up the skin. My DeliKate® Recovery Serum is great to protect and nourish, then my Peptide K8 Power Cream helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Finally, I’ll finish off with UncompliKated SPF Soft Focus Makeup Setting Spray for sun protection. At night, I mix it up, opting to do a double cleanse with my Gentle Daily Wash followed by Liquid ExfoliKate® as a toner. It is the next level of cleansing and it provides a bit of exfoliation. Next, I apply Quench Serum which is great for firming and plumping. I often mix that in with Peptide K8. Finally, I apply my Age Arrest Eye Cream which works wonders on crow’s feet and fine lines."2000182476

Kate Somerville SPF coming soon.

When asked if you can only do one thing for your skin, her advice is, "protect it from the sun. I know it’s not a terribly sexy or sophisticated answer, but it’s the truth. The sun does more damage to our skin than anything else in our environment. To avoid premature aging of the skin, apply SPF – 30 or higher – to skin every morning before you step outside. Even if you’re just in front of your computer monitor, blue light can wreak havoc on skin! So having an SPF that protects against blue light is also important."2000182476

Next to SPF she says, "hydration and moisturization are key." She explains, "hydration pumps skin full of water, or in the case of DermalQuench, Hyaluronic Acid. By replenishing your skin’s reservoir, you plump is which helps diminish signs of dryness, dullness, or fine lines. Moisturizing with a thick cream that’s got lots of lipids helps seal in all the great ingredients you use in your skincare routine and also prevents additional moisture loss. This helps skin look dewy, firm, refreshed, and healthy."2000182476

Kate Somerville on beauty: "I’m on a mission to help other women feel great about themselves as they age."2000182476

Somerville has much to say about positive aging and beauty. At 50 she is often quoted saying that aging is a gift, and skincare is a means to age gracefully. Elaborating on the detail, she says, "It’s corny but true that with age, comes wisdom. I wouldn’t trade anything for that! And I’m on a mission to help other women feel great about themselves as they age. It’s a privilege to grow older with the people you love and do work that you care about. As we say in the clinic, we’d never ask you to erase the memories that gave you those laugh lines, crow’s feet or signs of stress. But we can help you visibly diminish them so you can create more. So, what do we need to do to reduce some of the signs of aging? Kate's take is that, "consistency is key, its important to find a complete age repair system that works for you and work it morning and night. Know your ingredients, too. From Peptides that perform astonishing results when it comes to firming, lifting, or boosting elasticity to Retinol which is the top firming and smoothing ingredient, super hydrators like Hyaluronic Acid and Squalane that do a great job replenishing dullness and dryness, while Niacinamide evens skin tone and Glycolic Acid supports cell turnover. These are powerhouse anti-aging ingredients everyone should have in their skincare routine."2000182476

While 2020 was a difficult year for everyone Kate's positivity shines through, she says, "my hope for 2021 is that people make peace with what they see in the mirror. That they find a little more self-love and compassion. None of us are perfect. We will never truly turn back time. And… you can still feel good about how you look and love how you feel from the inside-out."2000182476

So, there you have it right from the skincare gurus mouth: The secret to beauty is not to take it or yourself too seriously and make peace with what you see in the mirror, with a little help from some of her skincare heroes too of course.
