THE OCTOPUS

At first glance, you may mistake this hairstyle as the shag haircut that’s taken social media by storm. But to be clear, there’s absolutely nothing fishy about the octopus haircut. Characterized by choppy visible layers, said to resemble octopus tentacles, the octopus haircut is a less textured version than the shag. The style still manages to keep length with short layers while maintaining volume at the top.

“I love the octopus haircut because it breathes new life into traditional layers with its unique silhouette,” says Aveda’s Senior Vice President of Global Artistry, Antoinette Beenders. “This cut showcases curls in such a beautiful, modern yet natural way. It's an easily-maintainable look when using the right styling products like those in the Nutriplenish line.” “What’s great is that it’s also a versatile cut that can be worn beautifully by those with all hair types and textures,” she added.

THE SHULLET

The shullet haircut is exactly what it sounds like: it blends different characteristics of a shag haircut with a mullet haircut - although it tends to offer a much less dramatic take on both. A classic shag cut has a fringe but the layers on top are mid-length. With a shullet, the layers on top are a lot shorter more in keeping with the cut of a classic mullet. The perfect style if you’re looking for something different without fully committing to either cut.

“To create this shullet, I used razor cuts to create seamless, sectioned layers,” explains Beenders. “We then styled the look using Aveda’s Invati Advanced Thickening Foam prior to blow-drying, where I then wrap-dried the tip and fringe forward. The look was finished with Aveda’s Brilliant Spray-On Shine.”

THE SLICED BOB

The versatility of the bob, along with the fact that it can be tailored for every face shape and hair texture, is why it remains one of the most-requested cuts at salons. But for summer 2022, it’s had a bit of a makeover: the sliced bob. As the name would suggest, a sliced bob is cut by slicing through the ends of the hair with a scissors to create an ultra-blunt style. The sliced bob created internal movement in the hair by taking the weight out. It’s sleek, razor-sharp styles also means it requires minimal maintrance and will work on a variety of hair types.

“The blunt and sleek jaw-length cut draws attention to facial features and emphasizes bone structure,” says Beenders. “To create this sliced bob, I cut on wet hair using slight diagonal subsections to accommodate for the curve of the neck,” she explains. “Once dried and styled, I emphasized the bluntness of the cut using a clipper to touch up the outline, and then added additional texture by slice cutting from mid-length to ends.” But who could ignore that shine? “

BIRCH TREE BLONDE

Whether you're a do-it-yourself kind of girl, or a 'spend your whole month's salary in the salon' kind of woman, having blonde hair is a full-time commitment. So, what to do if you want to change it up without undoing all your hard work and time in the hairdresser's chair? Go blonder.

“As we move into Summer 2022, hair colourists and salon guests alike are ready to upgrade their hair colour to something new, natural and ever so expensive looking to be ready for the exciting season ahead,” says Joe Hill, International Technical Capability and Design Manager, Aveda UK and Ireland. “Cool nude looking blondes that have a similar reflection of a birch tree will be a hugely popular shade.”

GLOSS BROWN

Whether you’re naturally dark or eager to try out a new colour, gloss brunette is the shade of the season. Despite summertime usually resulting in an urge to go lighter, it seems the world’s recent reconnection with nature has inspired this year’s hair trends with earth tones reigning most popular. Gloss brunette is essentially colouring your hair a darker tone to evoke healthy looking, shiny hair but also with some lighter pieces scattered throughout to provide a sunkissed look - it is summer afterall!

“My prediction is that cool hues will be having a moment, think about high shine brunettes that glisten with minky pearlescent undertones,” describes Hill. “The overall direction of hair colour is heading into a moment of calm, peace and tranquillity. Think: mushroom tones neither warm/cool or light/dark.”

SMOKEY BLONDE

You’re likely already familiar with the iconic smokey eye makeup look, which uses a selection of eyeshadows to create the illusion of shade and light, giving dimension to the eye with dramatic effect. So, how exactly does that apply to hair? A mix of smokey dark blonde and creamy pale sections with grown out roots that blend flawlessly in the mid-lengths for a totally natural and tailor-made look. It’s the ideal blonde shade for any low-maintance colour fans.

“Brunette or blonde not your thing?” asks Hill. “Smokey Blonde is an expensive looking go-to! I really love low commitment, soft, organic, premium looking colour techniques. Ask your Aveda artist for contour lights with shadowed roots for a hair colour personal to you that will make your feel incredible this summer.”
