WHAT’S TRENDING…FOR AUTUMN

We are in the mood for fashion and know you are too. Let us introduce you to the trends for autumn winter 2022. It’s vibrant, dynamic and full of colour, exquisite silhouettes and powerful outerwear.

HARD SHOULDER

How to wear the trend:
1980s power shoulders have returned. Whether it is pinstripe tailoring at Isabel Marant or structured tuxedos at Saint Laurent, shoulders are as wide as doorways this season. The pieces to look out for are oversized blazers and the tailored dress with wide shoulder, best seen at Prada and Dolce & Gabbana. Style as the catwalk layered over short skirts or sexy dresses.

Key Brands:
Dolce & Gabbana, Isabel Marant, Prada, Saint Laurent, Fendi, Sportmax.

ELECTRIC COLOUR

How to wear the trend:
An optimistic energy was seen across the runways this season with a palette of highly saturated colour. Vibrant tones of bright hues burst onto the scene and are here to brighten your wardrobe– from a retina-vibrating fuchsia at Valentino, to zesty tones of acid-green at Alexander McQueen, wear in a full look for extra impact.

Key Brands:
Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, Alexander McQueen, Isabel Marant.

IRRATIONAL SILHOUETTES

How to wear the trend:
Designers are playing with unusual shapes for autumn, from the oversized knot front jacket seen at Jonathan Anderson’s Loewe show, to the curved silhouette cape dress at Emilia Wickstead (an exciting new brand). Wave inspired sleeves at Valentino and pleated cotton finishes on dresses at Alaïa offer playful ways to work the trend. Style with over the knee boots to balance the silhouette.

Key Brands:
Alaïa, Loewe, Valentino, Emilia Wickstead, Dolce & Gabbana.

RETURN TO WAIST

How to wear the trend:
After many seasons of oversized shapes, designers are bringing their focus back to the body. Standouts from the shows were Versace’s slippery latex corsets as seen on Bella Hadid and Alaïa’s sheer waist mini dress, belted for extra waist-whittling appeal. Alexander McQueen and Dolce & Gabbana bring back their coveted Y2K corset shapes, worn with chunky boots for an autumnal update.

Key Brands:
Versace, Alexander McQueen, Christian Dior, Alaïa, Dolce Gabbana.

OUTERWEAR

How to wear the trend:
Models weren’t just cocooned in outerwear this season, they were enveloped, and swaddled. Prada and Saint Laurent finished coats with faux fur trims and wide lapels as well as details like hoods, pockets, and swathes of fabric twisted up around the body. Alaïa worked dramatic built-in scarf details. Think blanket puffers and enormous blazers, a look that's more charged than protective. Coats go big, it's time to take them out for a spin.

Key Brands:
Prada, Christian Dior, Saint Laurent, Erdem, Alaïa, Etro, Dries Van Noten.

HEMLINES HIT THE FLOOR

How to wear the trend:
What goes up must come down, after miniskirts dominated the catwalks for spring, lengths fell to the floor for autumn. Etro adds a feminine touch to this trend with fluid printed maxi dresses while Saint Laurent worked sophisticated edge in full-length cut-out ensembles finished with the brands signature flower brooch. While floor sweeping maxi skirts offered drama across the collections, Jil Sander injected colour into this trend, with a pretty lilac shade. Wear with a pouch clutch and an oversized blazer for true 2022 verve.

Key Brands:
Saint Laurent, The Row, Jil Sander, Mônot, Etro.

COLD BLOOMS

How to wear the trend:
Not just for the summer season, florals are reworked in cold tones for autumn. Delicate petals are blooming from many runway looks. At Prada, sheer panelled skirts with floral applique were the key fashion statements of the season. Elsewhere at Balenciaga, models traipsed through the snow in moody floral printed dresses, while at Acne cold tones of blue and yellow cover cosy outerwear. The styling trick this time is to team yours with stiletto heels and padded outerwear to add punch to your petals.

Key Brands:
Balenciaga, Prada, Acne, Alessandra Rich.

LEATHER FOR LIVING

How to wear the trend:
Leather in all its forms took the catwalks by storm. At Loewe, leather was frozen in motion on mini dresses, and at Victoria Beckham and Alaïa it was cut for wide strides in the form of mini and midi dresses. A throw on leather is just the thing to update everything in your wardrobe. One thing is for sure: these are clothes to put a swagger in your step all season long.

Key Brands:
Victoria Beckham, Prada, Loewe, Alaïa.

FEARLESS CUT OUTS

How to wear the trend:
The runways responded to the excitement of dressing for the dark again, collections were full of revealing cut-outs and exposed straps suggestive of a permanent state of undress, quite literally bringing sexy back. While the cut-out trend has been gaining momentum since last season, these slinky pieces were reworked in a feminine way. New brands Mônot , Mugler and Nensi Dojaka, represent this theme to perfection, creating a look of edgy full-length ensembles. How to style? Just add sky-high heels.

Key Brands:
Mônot, Nensi Dojaka, Mugler.
