TAKE IT TO THE MAX MARA

As the Max Mara collections drop in-store, get ready for our much-loved workshops to take place across the country. We caught up with stylist, Sinead Keenan, to talk new season Max Mara; we discover what makes a great coat and find out her styling tips for the season ahead. She says, “Max Mara is synonymous with coats and an absolute go-to brand for outerwear. As always, the selection of coats across the collections at Brown Thomas are a wonderful mix of essential styles. Whether you need a luxurious investment, statement coat or looking for a casual off-duty layer, you’ll certainly find the right piece for you.”

THE TEDDY REDUX

On The Teddy Coat…

“For the last few seasons, Max Mara has led the way with the Teddy coat trend. What I love about it is that while the original shape and style is still available, it’s also reinvented each season with a new reinterpretation of the shape or colour. The new shorter oversized biker style in Urban grey is a perfect alternative to the long winter version for those transitional months.”

COOL CAMEL

On The Camel Coat…

“As always, Max Mara only use the most premium quality fabrics for their coats and outerwear. From pure virgin wool, often mixed with cashmere and silk for a soft luxurious finish, to their famous use of camel hair for their most special pieces in the Camello collections. Also, the craftsmanship and construction are what sets Max Mara apart. Double-faced coats are a perfect example of the expertise shown in the brand's coats. This technique is where the coat is self-lined in the same luxury fabric, often by hand, in such a way that there are no visible seams.”

WINTER WHITE

On the Madame coat…

“One of my firm favourites from Max Mara is the iconic Madame 101801 coat. Designed and launched in the 1980s at the height of power dressing, it has been worn by grandmothers, mothers and daughters ever since, due to its timeless yet modern silhouette. The quality of the craftsmanship and luxurious fabrics have ensured longevity to the wearer and often become heirloom pieces among multi-generational women in a family. I love this version in luxurious winter white.”

I think in Ireland, due to the variable weather conditions, we often need multiple coats to very often deal with four seasons in one day! From personal experience, I find from September on, I need a lightweight coat/jacket for milder days, a raincoat or trench coat and then into a warm winter coat, often suitable for daytime and nights. I certainly have a closet devoted purely to outerwear!

IN THE NAVY

On the classic coat...

"Silhouette, length and colour are all details that should be determined by the shape and personal style of the individual wearer. However, as your coat is the item of clothing that takes the most wear and tear in your wardrobe, ensuring the quality of the fabric, the construction and its durability are key factors in a good coat. Avoiding anything too faddish or too trend-driven ensures you get longevity from your investment. Classic navy is a good place to start."

MIX IT UP

Sinead on styling Max Mara

“When choosing a coat the style needs to be determined by the height and shape of the wearer. If you're short, avoid the longer oversized styles etc. For me, I will be styling winter coats with knitted layers, cropped pants and chunky boots or a cool sneaker for a fresher, modern look.”
