A Call To Art

As we all remain in our homes during these uncertain times we at Brown Thomas wish to continue to keep our community together and inspired. This is a challenging time for all and although we may be physically apart we want to stay connected to you. Our teams have been sharing how they are keeping busy at home.

With this in mind, Brown Thomas have launched an initiative called A Call To Art. This is a creative challenge giving the community an opportunity to share how they are staying inspired and expressing themselves artistically and creatively using whatever materials are available at home.

Inspiring Entries

Our incredibly talented community were tasked to post their work and tag Brown Thomas with #BTACallToArt. Thus far, the team has been so impressed by what has been submitted. There has been a huge reaction from the community which has been wonderful to see from rug art to painted internal doors the creative and imaginative entries are wonderful.

The Art of Life

"Another digital sketch. My work of late has been exploring themes of individual growth and change. In today's world of social distancing and isolation its important we remember to be kind to ourselves" - Brian Giles, @sonofafoxx

"Tao of Flowers" - Jason Symes, @jasonsymes

"My son Zac has been busy... Now the Junior Certificate has been cancelled. He has lots of time to be creative. He loves art & fashion, he bought himself a couple of these Virgil Abloh designed Ikea bags in the summer and this week he painted his version of Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring on this one. He had recently painted Katsushika Hokusai’s The Great Wave on the other bag. We visited his brother who is studying in The Netherlands in February and went to the beautiful Mauritshuis Gallery in The Hague where we saw the original Vermeer, he bought a postcard which was his inspiration. It’s a gorgeous gallery, we hope we can return soon... I hope you have been enjoying the incredible sunshine." - Jane Boyle, @biscuitonthestairs

"A poster a day." - Shelley Trinder, @akalashell

A Canvas for Creativity

"One of a few works on paper made last week Looking forward to getting stuck into some bigger panel and canvas pieces this week. Cartwheels (2020) Acrylic, Sakura stick, paper, canvas collage on 300gsm paper 27x36cm." - Sophie Vigne Welsh, @sophia_vigne

"A newly finished painting titled 'On a Pedestal'. 60cm x 60cm. Oil and Acrylic on Panel." - Dee Walsh, @dee_walsh_artist

"Tea in the garden, quick sketch (20min) made in Pro Create using my favourite sketching 6B Pencil brush. I rarely share sketches in that state, but all my illustrations and projects start like that (often messier). Then, I add colours and textures, and keep that reference layer throughout." - Claire Provost @claire.prouvost

"Structure. With no studio to work from I will be trying my hand at some paintings and murals over the coming weeks. A change that is exciting and am looking forward to exploring! Hope everyone is staying safe out there." - Luke Reidy, @lukereidyy

The Magic of Making

"A quick repaint of the old JCB bucket." - Shane O'Driscoll @shane.odriscoll

"New work. 003 Line Series." - Kyle Cheldon Barnett, @kylecheldonbarnett

"While I’m loving lockdown life, and it truly suits me, I am however missing the studio." - Emma O' Hara, @emmaoharaartist

"Today, as I'm taking my first faltering step to journey into my dreams to create again, this piece of magic is what I'll hold in my mind's eye. I paint intuitively - which means I don't have a plan - I'm thinking, feeling, dreaming, pushing paint around, trying to find my way and find the painting. Without a clear path, so often it can be hard and frustrating. But every so often, through all the work, a jewel of a moment emerges and a painting flows like magic.
This painting was pure unfettered joy. Every layer, every colour, every mark sang to me. Like magic. Like a dream. 'The music of the wind and I am but a feather in it' 2020 acrylic and spray paint on canvas 100x100cm" - Éadaoin Glynn, @eadaoinglynn

Janet Takuz: Display artist Dublin

While at home I have been spending my time on some of my own personal projects. I enjoy drawing and have been creating a series of work for over a year now . I decided to create some positive illustrations for my personal social media platform I think now more than ever we need to see positivity on our screens.

Jo Malone

Nicole Dunne: Womenswear Stylist Dublin

"I needed an isolation wardrobe update for me and my daughter, so I decided to make my own dye out of beetroot."

Love from Lingerie

Simon Cummins: Womenswear Merchandiser

I’m currently focusing on a series of botanical drawings and paintings of wild Irish plants. Today’s drawing is of Wild Garlic, which is plentiful at the moment. I found some and made a wild garlic pesto.

The playlist is a moment of uplifting quiet time. We are currently inundated with constant news reports and worries. This is 40minutes to focus on yourself. It features Irish band Landless who’s beautiful voices should ease any worries.
