SISTER ACT

Back when YouTube was a little known platform, sisters Sam and Nic Chapman set up a channel dedicated to sharing the skills they’d accumulated over their careers as make-up artists. Their no-nonsense approach amassed a loyal and discerning fanbase. Now, with a cult channel, a million dollar make-up brush brand, bestselling book (Face) and even a BBC documentary under their belt, they are gearing up for yet another first – a M·A·C Maker collaboration. The duo have created a limited edition lipstick each in their dream shades, which hits shelves Thursday, 27th August.

Back when I worked for M·A·C I could never have dreamt that I would be in the situation of creating and launching my very own lipstick. It really is just such a career highlight. And so many of the people I worked with at M·A·C are so happy for me and supportive about it.

I really feel my colour is perfect for a wedding day and make-up on the move.

Deciding on their chosen shades was easier than anticipated. “We actually didn’t disagree at all (for once),” laughs Nic. “Luckily both Sam and I have a very distinct make-up style so it was easy for us to choose our colour. I knew that mine would be the more natural lipstick, while Sam would make a beautiful red. I really feel my colour is perfect for a wedding day and make-up on the move.” Sam’s red is on the opposite side of the scale. “It’s such a dynamic and strong colour that you’re able to wear it on its own with just a touch of base and a little brow. I’m really going to town with it and wearing it with some deep frosted eyeshadow shades to create more of a seventies Studio 54 vibe.”

When it comes to the secret of fresh looking skin, Nic suggests less is more. “Don’t overdo the make-up. Keep powder to a minimum so the make-up has a lovely fresh glow.” Sam doesn’t disagree, but believes groundwork always pays off. “The secret is all in the prep making sure that your skin is in fab condition prior to your make-up application makes all the difference.” Nic and Sam’s all time favourite M·A·C makeup essentials are “Hush” cream colour base, Face & Body foundation, Strobe Cream, "Power surge" kohl pencil, Shape & Shade brow pen, Extended play mascara and M·A·C Pro “Groundwork” paint pot.

With sustainability so high on the agenda, Sam and Nic are conscious to play their part and are continuing to adapt their daily beauty routines. “I’m really trying,” says Sam. “I’ve swapped out cotton wool and cotton buds and I use face cloths that can be thrown in the wash, and bamboo cotton buds so you don’t have to worry so much about the plastic. My biggest stress is the amount of PR packages that come in non-recyclable Jiffy bags, it makes me crazy.”

While the pair have enjoyed many career highlights over the years, they’re understandably excited about this pivotal moment teaming up with such a powerful global brand. “This is definitely up there as we have gone full circle and this is beyond our wildest dreams,” says Nic. “I’m so happy with my colour and a lipstick can really make all the difference.”
