Loewe: Making The Balloon Bag
Discover how the star of the Loewe Women’s Spring Summer 2020 Show, the Balloon Bag, came to be.
We have broken down the creation of this masterpiece by JW Anderson into four core aspects. From the Atelier itself, to the leather used in this style, here we pay homage to each aspect that impacted the formation of this iconic accessory.
1. The Atelier
LOEWE is one of the world’s major luxury houses, founded in 1846 in Spain. Today, it is under the creative direction of Jonathan Anderson. With their main workshop in Madrid, the master artisans have long valued artisanal techniques in their approach to design and manufacture, combining accumulated craft knowledge with new technologies to produce truly modern objects of desire.
2. The Leather
Drawing on the house’s longstanding expertise in leatherwork, the Balloon Bag is crafted from two kinds of leather: a round structured base of robust calf leather and, sitting inside of that, a sack of soft napa calfskin. This napa is of the highest, most full-bodied quality so the bag is left unlined. It’s just as smooth and tactile on the inside as out.
3. The Different Sizes
The Balloon bag comes in three sizes: small, medium and large. Each medium and large Balloon bag comes with a pair of straps. There’s a shorter handle so that it can be worn high on the shoulder or held in the hand, and a longer adjustable strap so that it can be slung across the body or hung low from the shoulder, depending on one’s style. This results in a highly versatile accessory, suiting a wide range of tastes.
4. The Transition: From Atelier to Runway
The star of the Loewe Women’s Spring Summer 2020 Show was the Balloon Bag. Structured yet relaxed drawstring bag, the Balloon uses intriguing construction to achieve a classically proportioned and clean-lined silhouette. A robust design that’s light in weight and comfortable to wear.
