THE NAKED TRUTH WITH NUDIE JEANS

If you are in the market for some sustainable denims then look no further than industry leader Nudie Jeans. We chat to their Sustainability Manager Sandya Lang on how the brand deals with emissions, transparency, traceability, living wages, longevity and zero waste.

We try to take a holistic approach to sustainability, and include all aspects from design and raw materials to prolonging the life of the garments and with our recycling program.

LET’S TALK ABOUT...

...CLIMATE

Sandya says: "Currently we map our CO2 emissions and in 2018 we compensated for all Nudie Jeans business travels and transports. Our goal for 2019 is to compensate for electricity use in all of our shops and offices as well as the emissions from our business cars. This means we will be carbon neutral for 2020."

By 2025, Nudie Jeans aim to be carbon neutral for all their business emissions, including supply chains, from raw materials to final product.

...TRANSPARENCY

"We will continue to be the front-runner when it comes to transparency, and by continuing to share our knowledge and lead the industry to further development in the use of sustainable materials and reduction in the use of chemicals."

...LIVING WAGES

"Right now we are investigating all our main suppliers and their employees need for a living wage. From our experience of working with living wages with our suppliers, we know that we need to have locally adjusted implementation strategies for it to work."

...TRACEABILITY

"The cotton used in our jeans mostly comes from Turkey, where we have a close relationship with our fabric manufacturers. They have a transparent and traceable cotton production. All cotton we buy is organically grown, it is very important as it has a positive impact on the local environment and the people who are growing it."

...LONGEVITY

"Our insider tip is to wear your Nudie Jeans for 6 months before the first wash. When your well-worn jeans finally break, you can repair them for free, or trade them in for a discount on a new pair."

…AND ZERO WASTE

"Reducing waste is a priority, not only in the factories but mostly by prolonging the life of our garments. In 2018 we repaired 55,173 pairs of jeans, collected 10,557 pairs for reuse for new products and as patching material, which means we saved 44,000 kg of clothes from being thrown away and saved 386,000,000 litres of water."
