OUR FASHION DIRECTOR'S MOODBOARDS FOR SPRING

Looking forward to warmer weather? Now is the time to plan your wardrobe with spring-summer’s most-wanted fashion as selected by our Fashion Buying Director Shelly Corkery.

The new collections presented for spring-summer were fashion’s way of making a fresh start. Designers brought much needed positivity for the season ahead, evident from the Pretty Petals and Acid Bright colourways. There is a Feminine Ease to the new season, a relaxed take on tailoring was seen in Slouchy Tailoring and continuing the easy-to-wear vibe was the Functional Future trend. Everyday Exuberance on the catwalks meant essentials got a luxe revamp, with fashion made to be worn at home or out-and-about. The Statement Shirt took centre stage with oversized silhouettes that had a feminine twist. While Daywear Denim, added a crafty, human touch to your wardrobe. Keeping with the times, the elevation of loungewear saw designers incorporate Team Spirit, stylish essentials and jersey basics worked with nostalgic details and fashion flair.

PRETTY PETALS

The Mood: Pretty Petals and joyful florals are just what we all need in our wardrobe right now. Valentino’s bright dresses (including a glamorous yellow number famously worn by Anjelica Huston) were stand-outs of the season and at Erdem, the master of romance, he worked not only his trademark delicate fabrics, but also strong silhouettes, capturing a whole new femininity.

The Key Brands: Bernadette, Erdem, Prada, Valentino

FUNCTIONAL FUTURE

The Mood: Miuccia Prada and Raf Simon’s captured the mood of the moment at Milan Fashion Week, by creating a collection which merged practicality with futuristic silhouettes at both Prada and Miu Miu. Raf Simon’s worked 1990s inspired trousers and tunic-length t-shirts with the famous triangle Prada logo paired with pointy-toed sling back kitten heels in a contrasting colour. Prim and pristine low-riding track pants, sharp track jackets, micro skirts donned the runway at Miu Miu allowing a seamless transition from work to play. Sporty blazers, little bowling jackets, neat shirts, and plaid skirts evoked school uniforms offer a preppy, futuristic yet easy to wear vibe.

The Key Brands: Miu Miu and Prada, The Attico, Stella McCartney

FEMININE EASE

The Mood: Easy breezy femininity brings an upbeat feel to our spring-summer wardrobes and will work just as well for above-the-keyboard dressing as it will for after-five. Think sophisticated, bohemian looks for loungewear offering a relaxed and earthy vibe. Pretty hues from dusky lilac and beige are tones that will carry across the seasons. Maria Grazia Chiuri at Dior set the scene and used linear and tie-dye effects inspired by traditional Japanese indigos. The infamous ‘Barre’ jacket is given a relaxed and deconstructed remake suitable for a post lockdown wardrobe. “The most important issue for me was to realize the new Dior silhouette: the jacket with the shirt and the pants” Chuiri explained. New and exclusive for spring-summer we introduce Tove which holds sustainability at the heart of their collection with signature pieces that can easily transition between day to evening and work to family.

The Key Brands: Chloé, Christian Dior, Khaite, Max Mara, Tove, Victoria Beckham

DAYWEAR DENIM

The Mood: What was Valentino’s best kept secret for spring-summer? A surprise collaboration with Levi’s. Lace, macramé, crochet, and embroideries were reworked and paired with relaxed blue denims adding a crafty, everyday touch. Designers are shifting to oversized jean fits with confidence, best seen at Victoria Beckham. Her lines were longer and slouchy, paying homage to the post-lockdown fashion landscape, Beckham said this collection was ultimately about sensing the winds of change: what women will want to wear on the other side.

The Key Brands: Balenciaga, Celine, Ganni, Valentino, Victoria Beckham

EVERYDAY EXUBERANCE

The Mood: Statement pieces are given an everyday revamp for the season ahead. Think easy-to-wear stylish sweatshirts, long tunics and ballooning trousers that offer elegance and comfort. Dries Van Noten showcased fashion that sparks sheer joy in the form of exuberant prints, jeans, cardigans, and midi-skirts. Dolce & Gabbana’s show offered escapism with a collection dedicated to the designers’ beloved Sicily. Hourglass dresses and sharply cut dresses were placed together from squares of brocade, chiffon, georgette and cotton. “The important thing to us is that each piece is interpreted by skilled hands, one after the other, and in that way each has its own character, its own story, its own passion, its own vision,” said Dolce. Isabel Marant also brings 1980s glamour to our wardrobes with her evening-into-daywear vibe she does so well.

THE STATEMENT SHIRT

The Mood: Statement details and craft construction were key on the spring-summer runways. The power shirt is here to stay and is evident across all the collections. Designers showcase masculine inspired tailoring with a feminine touch. Crisp white cotton and formal stripes are seen at Dolce & Gabbana and Erdem with an injection of colour as seen at Valentino, with oversized shirting in bright neon pink.

SLOUCHY TAILORING

The Mood: It’s no surprise with so many of us working from home tailoring has changed with the times with the catwalks showing more relaxed, deconstructed silhouettes. Dries Van Noten has ticked all the boxes on how we will all want to look and feel like next summer. Think black papery cotton dresses with cut-out necklines and jackets that are foiled and slightly padded which are soft and beautiful to the touch. A more relaxed vibe was also seen at Dior, where wide legged trousers and kimono style jackets donned the runway. Warming butter, cream and camel tones work not only for summer, but will transition into autumn, too as seen at Max Mara.

TEAM PLAYER

The Mood: The rise of loungewear and a shift towards elevated basics sees designers accentuate the ease, versatility and comfort of jersey while incorporating decorative detailing to offer a light-hearted mood. Balenciaga and Celine lead the way with prim and pristine low-riding track pants. Vibrant striped knitwear seen at Miu Miu was worked with sporty blazers and neat shirts evoking a school uniform vibe. While new brand for spring-summer 2021 The Attico continues with this theme showcasing cut-out clingy numbers and miniskirts in liquid jersey with drawstring draping effects.
