THE FUTURE OF FASHION WITH REDVALENTINO
REDValentino fosters creativity for ten Central Saint Martins students, the next generation of image makers by tasking them with the campaign for its spring-summer 2021 collection, the results speak for themselves…
Why would a label as iconic as REDValentino invite students from the MA Fashion Image Course especially at a time of crisis for the whole world? Our best guess is to give an opportunity of a lifetime to budding talent. But this is not just any fashion school. Central Saint Martins alumni reads like a who’s who of the fashion world since the 1980s including Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, John Galliano, Marc Jacobs, Pheobe Philo and Simone Rocha to name but a few.
Ten students; Aparna Aji, Bluebell Ross, Eomji Sim, Isabella Soliman, Kallan Huges, Lowri Cooper, Martus Chai, Phoebe Wilkinson, Ruby Pluhar and Yao Peng were each asked to showcase their own interpretations of REDValentino's latest collection through short film or a series of stills.
A campaign that leaves big names and ego at the door and gives youth an opportunity is nothing short of a masterstroke from the Italian house. This new world requires a new perspective for fashion and where better to get this breath of fresh air approach than with the next generation of image-makers sure to think outside of the box.
Creativity not as generating ideas; creativity as critical judgment, elaboration, testing and even rejecting a new concept. It’s about the value of deep understanding for an original result. Fashion as a personal point of view, as an experience, to create something meaningful... A dream you make alone is a dream. A dream you make in two, or more, becomes reality.
REDValentino.
The brief was two-fold, firstly to reject the norms and conventions of fashion on-screen and secondly to get creative with the restraints of lockdown without the use of their studios. The result is a surreal look into the future of fashion photography and film-making thanks to their techniques and style, yet totally familiar. This is because many of the students used friends, family, their childhood homes and flats as the backdrop of their story. Confined to the home or locality, this series is a perfect representation of this unique space in time but also a bright spark for the future.
