Join us this May in our Dublin store for The Textile Project, a unique mentoring programme in association with NCAD which nurtures and promotes young Irish design talent.

Our Creative Director John Redmond and our Store Creative team have worked with 21 students to create a series of prints that will be showcased on a special mannequin installation in store, 2 designs have been chosen to create a limited edition silk scarf and candle wrap for a Max Benjamin candle.

The below print will also line the inside of the iconic Brown Thomas shopping bag.

5 MINUTES WITH THE MAKERS

We caught up with the individual groups to find out the inspiration behind their prints and their thoughts on the design process.

REGAINED VESSELS PRINT

"As a group we wanted to create a print for menswear. We began the project by drawing sustainable materials and developed six very unique designs which make up a cohesive men’s collection. The Store Creative team briefed us to design something fun and unexpected, which we achieved by playing with bright, bold and clashing colours. It will make a dramatic statement in store."

MANNEQUIN PRINT

"We were inspired by 18th century floral prints and Brown Thomas shop fittings - so we combined the two and made a print with the actual mannequins. The idea is that you only notice that the floral print is made from deconstructed mannequins when you look closely at it. Seeing it being used a candle wrap for a Max Benjamin candle is amazing."

JUXTAPOSITION BRIDGES PRINT

"The inspiration for our prints came from the idea of contrasting elements, perfect meets imperfect. We started by drawing the skyline of Dublin city. As a group we have contrasting styles and we used this to our advantage to create something very special. We are delighted to see this print for sale as a limited edition scarf in Brown Thomas."

THE WEAVER'S PRINT

"For our prints we were inspired by the process of weaving. We developed the design from graph paper drawings of different tools and machinery, from looms, yarn spools and balls of wool. Seeing the print worked onto mannequins and in Brown Thomas Dublin will be a dream come true."

DISTILLER'S PRESS PRINT

"The inspiration for our project came from the distillers press, a special print room located in NCAD. Lettering formed the print design and we played with scale and bright colourways. We wanted the design to have impact in store and to turn customers heads."

Brown Thomas are delighted to be working with NCAD on this really exciting project. The brief was to work with the 2nd year students to embrace colour, pattern and textures in their design and we feel the work that the students have delivered has far exceeded all our expectations. What’s really exciting about this collaboration is that we have developed 2 products that will be sold in store – a limited edition candle and silk scarf using these beautiful vibrant prints!
