SPF Explained

Finding the best sun protection factor, or SPF, is an essential daily part of every skincare routine.

The most important thing when choosing an SPF is to know what to look for when protecting skin from UV rays (think UVA for preventing Ageing and UVB for preventing Burning). Here are our sun care commandments to help you ensure your SPF is doing the most to protect you.

Prevent sun damage and protect your skin

1. Go Higher

Always use a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. The SPF in your sunscreen absorbs and reflects the sun’s rays and protects your skin from their damaging effects. It’s not enough to rely on moisturisers or makeup containing SPF. To prevent sun damage and protect your skin, it is essential to incorporate a facial sun cream, and apply after your morning skincare, before make-up application.

Clarins UV + SPF 50 for face is an effective ultra-light formula that protects skin from the damaging effects of UV rays, free radicals and pollution to keep skin looking young, radiant and even in tone.

2. Double Duty

Choose a multi-functional sun cream that not only protects your skin from UV and pollution, but also hydrates and intensely moisturises at the same time.

Kiehl’s Ultra Light Daily UV Defense Anti Pollution SPF50 is an ultra-light formula that gives deep moisturisation and provides an effective defence against both UVA/UVB rays, and skin-damaging pollutants.

Mineral and a chemical sunscreen

3. Suit Your Skin - Mineral vs chemical

There are two types of SPFs. The simple difference between a mineral and a chemical sunscreen is that a mineral one sits on the surface of your skin and deflects rays, while a chemical one absorbs into your skin and absorbs the rays.

MINERAL FORMULA:

A mineral (also known as physical) formula contains ingredients like titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which reflect the sunlight. Mineral sunscreens form a barrier on your skin that filters UVA and UVB rays. If you have oily, acne-prone or sensitive skin, consider a mineral sunscreen.

ESTEE LAUDER Perfectionist Pro Multi-Defense UV Fluid SPF45 with 8 Anti-Oxidants is a next generation 100% mineral-based protection sunscreen. Offering UVA/UVB broad spectrum defence it’s a smooth, lightweight fluid that helps support naturally firm, bouncy skin and helps prevent dehydration from heat or air conditioning.

CHEMICAL FORMULA Suncream

CHEMICAL FORMULA:

Chemical sunscreens absorb the UV rays before they reach your skin, and are usually preferred by many because they are easy to spread. A chemical SPF won’t give you flashback in photos and tend to feel a lot lighter on the skin so ideal for normal skin types. Note, while chemical sunscreens in body lotions and sprays may be easier to apply, you may need to reapply more often than you would with a thicker mineral cream option.

LA MER The SPF 50 UV Protecting Fluid is a powerful, lightweight fluid formula that contains the brand’s adored Miracle Broth as well as high spf protection to help prevent the appearance of future discolourations while keeping comfortable, hydrated and soothed.

4. Wear It Well

Our skin can take up to 30 minutes to absorb sunscreen. So, plan ahead and apply sunscreen liberally before going outside.

Sunscreen wears off throughout the day, so it’s important to reapply generously every two to three hours – or as often as the product recommends (especially after exercising or swimming), to maintain protection.

Clarins Sun Care Body Lotion-in-Spray UVA/UVB 50+ offers very high sun protection for all skin types. While protecting the skin from harmful damage caused by the sun, this hydrating lotion also leaves the skin soft with no white streaks.
